Okay everyone. What do you think of Googles new email service? www.gmail.com
They are providing 1GB capacity, and for now, it's free. It will also feature the ability to search any email you have written in Gmail. How do you think it compares to Yahoo, Hotmail, or .Mac? Would you consider using the service as long as it's free? Would you pay to use it for spam protection?

No, mainly because I don't want ads with my email based on the content of each email:

I know this isn't going to be a popular idea but...well, I don't really care if they read my emails. I never say anything earth-shattering in them anyway, and if someone wanted to read my emails right now, they could find a way to do it. The privacy concern just isn't my top priority. The 1 gigabyte of storage is!!! /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I don't even mind the text-only ads. I can hardly wait until gmail is availble so I can sign up.
Email is not private, anyway. Not really. There is no way to completely secure it so that if someone persistent wanted in they could not get your mail.

Once it goes public, I'll probably create an account just to see what it's like, but since my university supplies me with web space and an e-mail account, I really don't need a web-based e-mail client for the time being.
Google does searching pretty damn well. I'm interested in seeing how well they do e-mail.

Actually there is a way for total security.
Buy a server, buy a fast internet connection, and turn your server into an email server. You can use it to both securely receive mail and use it as an open relay if you want to send anonymous emails /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Though it's probably a heck of a lot cheaper just to use hotmail.

Exactly, Googles computers will be reading the emails, not Google employees. I mean, anyone running an email server can read your email if they really want to (including Hotmail, Yahoo). The only solution, as previously mentioned, is to set up your own mail server. I don't really have a problem with computers scanning my e-mails for content to display relevant adds. I mean, if you're really going to send messages that need to be kept confidential, you should use Public Key Cryptography (is that with a c or a k).
I like the fact that the interface will probably be fast, and I will be able to scan for any email I have ever sent, and display it within the context in which it was sent (google will present emails as a conversation based on replies etc...). Yes I know that Mail.app and Entourage have search functions. However they dont have the last ten years of my email archived. Nor would I go through the trouble of manually transferring my email every time I buy a new computer. Google will take care of this for me. Google has a history of maintaining high levels of quality. I will certainly give Gmail a try.
