You can use any wireless router. Just try to make sure that your router has a web based configuration utility. That way you will be able to configure it by entering the IP address of the router in your browser. If the router uses a Windows only configuration utility, you will have to use a Windows machine to set it up.

I have been using a Linksys router for over a year now and it has been real good to me /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Otherwise, the following are 2 products from Linksys that I would recommend checking out:
802.11b Wireless Router:
http://www.linksys.c...cid=35&prid=544

802.11g Wireless Router:
http://www.linksys.c...cid=35&prid=601
They both have an additional 4 port Ethernet switch allowing you to connect those devices you have that aren't fortunate enough to have a wireless card. They do have web config via a browser. You should also be able to upgrade the firmware using a Mac if needs arise (but DO look into that).
Now briefly about the differences of the 2: 802.11b is the standard that will provide you up to 11Mbps while 802.11g's standard will push that envelope to 54Mbps.
Know the question is, even though Apple's Air Port Extreme is 802.11g-compliant, where are you gonna use it and to what extent? If it is for regular home use (i.e. you've not got tons of machines using this wireless connection) then you may just want to save yourself some money and get the 802.11b router. If you are a techno-freak and have tons of machines (or just like having the best) ... hey they still have the 802.11g there to quench the desire.
Good luck!!!

I use mine with both Netgear and Linsyx and the airport card switches between them automatically detecting the signal.

Hey Sissa,
Does that 802.11g router act as a print server, too? You said that it has 4 ethernet ports - does that mean I can hook up my printer to it? What other devices would I need to hook to my router? Thanks.

Athadar,
Well, the answer to the question is not maybe what you want to hear but Linksys (and other vendors I'm sure) has 2 wireless print server products (so you are going to have to shelf out more money ... another vendor may have an all-in-one integrated solution):
http://www.linksys.c...cid=37&prid=584
http://www.linksys.c...cid=37&prid=440
Check them out but as I have never used a wireless print server product, I am not going to preach more but do let us know if you play around with any print server you may get.
Ciao and good luck.

woodsteve5,
I use a Belkin wireless router for my ibook that is plugged into a wired router in a home network. The price was about $50 cheaper (after rebate) than what Belkin is charging on their site. The router works great and was a snap to get communicating with the ibook.
I know people who use Netgear, D-Link and Linksys.
I ONLY got the Belkin solely for price. It has worked fine. Netgear would have been my #1 choice though had it been the same price.

the 802.11g router (WRT54G) from LInksys is no good. I bought it and quickly returned it. It fails to show certain websites, any website that has a lot of material to download will be bounced. This is a known issue, and Linksys says that they are working on fixing it. I just couldn't wait, so I'm back on my old Microsoft 802.11g router (which is fine, except iChat AV does not work).
My experiences with wireless routers:
Linksys WRT54G: known issues (software update will NOT work with this router attached), no new firmware upgrade, flexible, iChat AV works...
Microsoft 802.11G: cannot disable iChat AV ports... file transfer issue... no new firmware update despite company's acknowledgement of problem (typical Microsoft attitude).
steer clear of either makes.

One of the best investments I have made as far as wireless routers go is the 54g wireless router from Belkin. It has never failed me or restricted me from accessing sites like the equivalent Linksys routers do. Now-a-days you can pick one up at Staples for $79 and then get a $20 mail-in rebate along with it (i think). Here's a link to reference what I speak of. Belkin wireless router at Staples.com

Funny you mention this because I was going to purchase that router. Do you have anything written up on this, forum posts, or notifications from Linksys. I believe Linsys is owned by Cisco so they know networking and in my research I have yet to hear anybody claim this. I'm not saying your wrong, its just I haven't come across it yet, which is why if you have any source material it would be helpful and I would appreciate it.
I was debating between this and the airport extreme - a little more expense but it does give you printer sharing which is what I need. I'm not sure how much those wireless printer interface cards were that was in one of the prior posts but that obviously would then factor into the total cost which lowers the price delta between the two units. I also liked Linksys unit b/c it had four ethernet ports for non wireless computers.
Thanks
Mike

search around for a linksys forum. i did that before and found numerous hacked firmware upgrades that promised to do the job. unfortunately, those hacked versions led to even more problems and so on....
anyway, it's out there.. do a little search on google or something.
tons of people use linksys, and have this problem, so u're not alone. but up until now, there is no fix. none official either.
linksys has responded by promising a firmware update soon - whenever that may be. (that's also from the linksys forum)

I just this afternoon installed my new NetGear WGR614 and it was incredibly easy to set it all up. Good range as well.
