as in windows xp etc can i force osx to use the lexmark 5150 drivers for my dell a940 usb .mac osx identifies the dell a940 under printer setup but i am a new mac user and don't know if i can force the use of other drivers as i can under win xp etc. any advice is welcome as i have thrown out my win desktop after too many crashes but like the dell printer.dell typically state that it is only compatible with xp .thanks again.

Yes, you can force OS X to use drivers. But, that's not your problem. Your problem is that the Lexmark-provided driver doesn't support the cups comm modes (called backends in cups), and therefore doesn't work for shared/network printing.
It is possible that an open source driver for a related model could work:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/
Good luck.
