You can easily simulate POP3 by using a Rule to copy messages to a local folder.
In Mail.app, go to Mail > Preferences > Rules. If "Account" "Your AOL Account," "Copy Message" "Your Local Folder."
Mac 911 Weblog: AOL's Open Mail Access Isn't

I've gone back to using the AOL interface to deal with my e-mail, rather than the hassle of using Apple Mail.
For some reason, even though I'm sending through smtp.aol.com, not all my sent mail gets saved...ANYWHERE. Also, sometimes I get my mail at work, then when I try at home, its all gone from the server. I though IMAP was supposed to leave it on the server? Anyway, with all the rules I've had to make, and disappearing e-mails I've had to hunt down, its just not worth it.
Another thing about rules in Apple Mail: I can't keep it from saving junk mail to my saved folder. The program recognizes that it is junk, but because the rule says to move it to another folder, it doesn't go to the junk folder. Apparantly rules only work once on any given piece of mail, because I've written additional rules to move the junk mail to the correct folder but they don't "take".
Anybody have any similar problems?

AOL is unlike most IMAP providers in that older messages expire from the server. This mirrors how things work with the AOL client, so it's not like you're getting a different experience there.
If you uncheck the box to "Store sent messages on the server," don't they instead get placed in the local Sent folder?

Reorder your rules by dragging them up or down in the list. Move your junk rule before your copy rule.
