I (in France using an Canon DV camera )am attempting a videoconference linkup with my family (in Australia using an iSight camera). I am on an ethernet link with Institute's server and my family is on broadband. managed two successful connections out of about 20 attempts. When successful, they are blurry and I am clear. What can I do to improve successful connections? Conference doctor tells us that there is insufficient bbandwidth. iChat help suggests we limit the bandwidth from the Preferences menu, but no matter what either of us selects as a bandwith there is no effect. Audio only connect is always successful. Any advice that help me keep in touch with my loved ones will be greatly appreciated. By the way, no problem when I connect with my home laboratory in Australia, using iSight) to discuss work.

if you are able to successfully video conference with someone else, then the trouble appears to be on your family's end.
Sounds like the upload on their broadband is not quite fast enough. Some broadband services have very fast downloads but slow uploads. Even some old cable modems (few work this way now) would download through the cable, but upload through a standard phone line so you could download a picture really fast, but still send it only at 28.8 kbs or, if lucky, 56k.

OK so bandwidth is the problem. How can I reduce bandwidth requirement of iChat to allow a successful connection?
