My son & daughter live in CT and I travel alot, so I bought them an iSight camera and put Panther on their G4's, in the hope that we could videoconference via my G4 PB and matching iSight. The cameras work fine in the US, but as soon as I travel overseas, they don't. I've tried connecting from Istanbul (nope), Vienna (yes, no problem), Paris (nope), and now Milano - nope (all connections being highspeed broadband or DSL). I have an apartment in Milano and had an IP named FastWeb put in a highspeed connection. This works fine for internet, but doesn't work for iSight. Their technical people have finally said that they've had alot of complaints about webcams and they apparently can't get them to work. I've tried bypassing FastWeb to connect via public areas on the net, but nope. Applecare Italy have told me categorically that iSight doesn't work with FastWeb - but they aren't working on a solution and have no suggestions. Genius Bar at Apple Store in Santa Monica said they have no information about iSight not working in Italy. Does anyone have any suggestions, or should I just get another highspeed IP and try again ?

Well, another 911 poster says he's working in France and can get iSight to work fine on his end but has trouble with family in Australia. he gets their picture but it's poor quality. So it's not all over Europe.
It may be a question of conflicts with firewall ports. I know someone who uses a wireless router (in the States) and was able to use the video chats fine and then started having problem. They suddenly had to set their computer access to open up certain ports for iChat AV.
I've had the same trouble at home on the audio chats. If I plug directly into my cable modem I can use the voice just fine, but as soon as I go through my wireless router voice won't work but standard typing chats go through. I've added in the open ports to my computer's configuration my friend did but haven't had a chance to test the voice with that addition.
I don't have an iSight yet but want to get one for home soon for when I'm traveling -- in Europe.

I am in France and my family is in Australia. I have good evidence that a successful connection (firewalls aside) is dependent on the bandwidth. If one, either upload or download is limiting, then I get a message tellling me just that. What I would like to do is limit the bandwidth requirement using the preferences menu, but it seems to have no effect. I would expect some degradation in quality of the video, but a successful connection. Under these circumstances, we revert to audio only and everything is fine. I predict the variability you find from place to place (not necessarily country to country) is due to bandwidth. To check if you can connect try audio only mode. It is a great experience when you make contact (2 out of about 20 attempts for me). Good luck.
