CrecenS,

What did you do to your system to make it go down? Don't blame the OS because you screwed
it up. Blame yourself.

No way. I mean I'm using X 90% of the time after I got Dreamweaver and Flash MX to complete my X apps collection. But there are still some apps not there for X that I might use 2 or 3 times a year but I still need them there to use nonetheless.

Now Peter, pay attention,

I never blamed OSX for my system crash, I just said that it crashed, and that it was nice to have a backup OS. Since half my apps are still OS9, it makes a good back up system. Wouldn't you agree?

And actually, I didn't screw up my system, it screwed itself up. Two system processes were fighting over the same memory block. As far as I know, there was nothing I could have done to stop that.

This rings a bell... Maybe from one of Apple's switch ads?

The ONLY thing I use Classic for is PageMaker. I called Adobe up and they said that they'll have a new version that is OS X native before January, which is when I am buying a new G4. So, when I get my new computer, the first thing I am doing is reformatting it and getting rid of OS 9. Then, finally, I will be rid of it forever! There is nothing else at all I do with OS 9. The boot cd can come in handy just in case of a disaster, but there is a small program that allows a bootable CD of OS X. I think it's called BootCD (might check versiontracker).

I think the better question is simply one of choice. Today Apple announced that Macs would no longer boot into OS9 in 2003. I think they need to give us more information as to how this will be implemented. If the plan on simply not building any new Macs that can support OS9, fine! Just make sure all your loose ends are tied up in X. That means printer drivers, scanners, ect. Until installers, Firmware Updates, ect. All go just fine in OSX, until Apple has an easy way to repair a damaged OSX system (without having to do a complete reinstallation of X), until a person simply has no reason to go into OS9 on a new Mac, they really shouldn't remove OS9 support.

I also think they should tell us what benefit this gives US! (Besides the silly "We save a few dollars on OS9 development in our new hardware" reason). If this transition is not going to have some huge benefit to the user. It really isn't worth it.

Without bringing this whole topic back up, it is simply a personal choice. There is and will always be users that need, rely or want to use OS 8 or 9, not X.
