I recently tried to download the newest version of iTunes onto my iBook and am now experiencing some severe problems. After I shut down the computer and attempted to restart all I got was wallpaper, NO ICONS! I've run my hardware test disc and everything is okay there. I've attempted a safe-boot, and have tried to turn off my extensions but can never get the extensions manager screen up (by holding down the shift key during startup). I've also tried holding down the alt key and the apple key during startup. Nothing is working I still just have wallpaper!!!
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks!

It would help if you would include information about your Mac in your post. Which iBook, what operating system, how much RAM, which version of iTunes, etc.? Anything else that might be pertinent.

Well, unfortunately I don't know exactly which ibook I have its about 3 years old, only cd drive (can't write cd's or watch dvds). sorry don't have it or any paperwork in front of me. I have osx.2, and have no idea what version of itunes it was (tried to download on Sat. so whatever version from the website). Updated RAM last year, don't know how much. Apologies for inability to answer these basic questions but am flustered. If you don't think I can get help here without knowing this information, please tell me and I will attempt to locate it.
Thanks!

Okay try this, but first shutdown and disconnect everything from your computer, except the Power Cord.
Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3. Turn on the computer.
4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
6. Release the keys.

If that doesn't work try to resetting the PMU, but because I don't know your iBook model there are different ways to do it. See if these instructions apply to your iBook:

iBook and iBook (FireWire) computers
1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
2. Disconnect the AC power adapter.
3. Remove the battery.
4. Press and release the reset button (shown here) located above the Power button at the base of the display. Use a small, blunt instrument such as a paper clip to press the button.
5. Wait 5 seconds.
6. Reconnect the AC power adapter.
7. Put the battery back in the computer.
8. Press the Power button to restart the iBook computer.

iBook (Dual USB), iBook (Late 2001) and iBook (14.1 LCD)
1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
2. Disconnect the AC power adapter.
3. Remove the battery.
4. Press and release the reset button (shown here) located above the Audio/Video port on the left side of the iBook (Dual USB) computer by inserting the end of a paper clip into the small hole and gently pressing the switch once.
5. Wait 5 seconds.
6. Reconnect the AC power adapter.
7. Put the battery back in the computer.
8. Press the Power button to restart the iBook computer.

iBook (16 VRAM), iBook (14.1 LCD 16 VRAM), iBook (14.1 LCD 32 VRAM), iBook (32 VRAM), and iBook (Opaque 16 VRAM), iBook (Early 2003), iBook (800 MHz 32 VRAM), iBook (900 MHz 32 VRAM), iBook (14.1 LCD 900 MHz 32 VRAM), iBook G4, iBook G4 (14-inch), iBook G4 (Early 2004), iBook G4 (14-inch Early 2004)
For iBook (16 VRAM) computers and later models of iBook, there is no physical reset button.
1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
2. Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
3. Wait 5 seconds.
4. Press the Power button to restart the iBook computer.

Another thing to try:
Try Disk Utility
Steps for using Disk Utility
Insert your Mac OS X CD-ROM disc or Restore DVD disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
Once started up from CD or DVD, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
Click the First Aid tab.
Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
Select your Mac OS X volume, if necessary.
Click Repair.
If this doesn't work take a look at Apple's Support Page"
