My office is using a power macintosh g3 with 192 megs of ram and a 233mhz processor and OS 8.6 as a server for our large format plotter. It doesn't do the best job and I wondering if updating the OS to 9.2 would make a difference and whether or not this machine can run OS 9.

thanks

It can certainly run 9. Don't know how much it will help your issue, though.

most any version of OS 9.2.2 will work on that. However, if you want to, you can put OS 10 Jaguar- that might be nice. I'm not sure how to configure it into a server. ALthough Panther wont work, jauar will. if you want panther to work, you could find a PCI video card- browse ebay, there are a few. But OS 9 will be fine- you could add all the bells and whistles too.

After you check out the compatibility article, the next thing you'll want to determine is whether the software you currently depend on is fully compatible with the newer system you want to install. For example, find out if the printer has drivers available specifically for 9.1 or whatever other version of the OS you consider.
I have found 9.1 more reliable than 8.6, but as the first poster said, the changes between system versions may have nothing to do with the performance issues you have.

You can stop at OS 9.1: there's no benefit to
9.2 in a pure MacOS environment.
And 9.1 install CDs are cheap these days.
I wouldn't put any version of OSX on that
old beast. You'd just embarrass it. Not
enough horsepower.
