To whom may read this..... HELP!!!
I work for a small publishing company where I am laying out 3 unique magazines a month with different sizes and post sript settings, etc. We upgraded to quark 6.1 and man i having problems, first let me list my problems:
Can not place pdf in picture box with out quirk crashing
Can not export to pdf without quirk crashing
when writing a postscript file to the virtual printer (prinergy refiner) with print styles the ps has 0kb. - but if i create a post script for the hp 5500 it works. (background info--- we then take our post script to distiller)
some images list as wrong type
quark files place themselves in diffrent folders on the server as well as give them selves different names and icons.
This is a real downer for a quark fan. and we can not switch to indesign due to customers and age old quark user at work.
Just to thow out what we have done thus far: re-installed OSX and Quark (2 times) trashed preferences, trashed printers and reinstalled those.
Please oh please HELP!!!!!!

Don't know the answer to that.
But the Quark forums are up and running.

Why did you upgrade in the first place? Quark 6.1 is still new running on a new OS. Production work should always be done with software known to work and Q6.1 and OSX are not yet RFPT. Now as to your problems
What version PDF are you tring to import? Quark can only import upto version 5 PDF's(v1.4). As for the other problems many people are having them also just check Quarks or even Adobe's InDesign forums. If you still have Quark 5, I suggest you backsave to v5 and output from there. I've got Quark 6.1 working pretty solid after 2 months of agravation but I still backsave to v5 then to the last known working version of Quark(4.11) for outputting anything important. Thank Adobe for Indesign because if quark 6.1 was all I had I'd never get any work out.

Interesting--
I use Quark 6.1 on a daily basis, and with the exeception of annoying PDF output, haven't had any major issues like the one mentioned. If it's any help, I routinely place PDFs from many sources (some quite large) into layouts for output. Sometimes there may be an application crash when exporting PDFs, but relauching usually solves that, and I suspect part of the problem on that particular machine is that the disk is pretty full, and there hasn't been time to remedy it. On another machine with more space and memory, and where I do a considerable amount of work, including 100-page + documents, it runs trouble-free usually.
But the PDFs...
What can be said... Comparing two identical files--one created in QX 4.1, one in QX 6.1, the first being run through Adobe PS, the second either exported directly as PDF, or run through Distiller, has wildly different results in regard to file size. Even if the export settings are set to the lowest-quality JPEGs @ 72dpi for images, and compression is enabled, the v.6 file is exponentially larger. Therfore, I open them in Acrobat 6 and run the Reduce File Size command. That, I must admit, is quite annoying.
Also, exporting for Distiller from v.6 seems to take an eternity for any file. Why, I have yet to figure out...

I dunno if this helps but....
After many of the same probs I was told to reinstall Quark but beforehand to set my computer date forward to 2010
Since then it has worked perfectly. (Afterwards you can reset the date)

Also dont 'export' to pdf but go to 'print' and then select the 'printer' button on the bottom left. The new window that appears has a tab 'save as pdf'... choose it and select destination. The resolution is defined by what you choose as default in the main preferences.
I hope this all makes sense!
Let me know how you get on!!!!!!
