I have an iMac 800mhz, 256ram, 60gbHD, etc.
I unfortunately use AOL as my ISP. Now I don't know if it has anything to do with AOL or not, but often enough, when I click sign on for AOL, I get a pop-up from my SYSTEM PREFERENCES, saying that the modem isn't recognized, etc.
When I open the SYSTEM PREFERENCES, and go to the NETWORK SETTINGS, it seems that the little lock on the bottom left of the page is always unlocked, and I have to play around with various settings...either switching the TCP/IP settings to manual and leaving the modem on Apple Internal Modem, or going back and putting the TCP/IP setting back to aol dialup, etc.
It always does this.
Any clues, suggestions, ideas?

Hi,
Actually AOL is an OSP http://www.oakton.ed...ne/tech/isp.htm ..the URL UBB code dosn't seem to work right now /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif I'd try changing your local dialup # first Keyword: access, and then lock your settings to Apple's Modem. Repost with your OS if this doesn't work.

anvil666, there is really nothing else to mess around in the Network settings for AOL. The one exception is the Network Port Configurations in the Show pop-up menu. The check box for "Internal Modem" should be check marked by clicking in the check box to activate modem for dial-up use and should be be on the top of the list for the configuration; or else click and drag to the top of the list of the configuration for the system to choose first.
Btw, if my guess is right, the system is auto unlock at user level when you log-in for ease of use.

techman's advice made me think of something else you might try if things are still wonky. Trash Access Numbers & Disconnet Log files (quit AOL first and new ones will be created) found: Users/Shared/America Online folder/Access Numbers & Disconnect Log. Good luck..
[edit] ..are you using the latest version of AOL 10.3?
