You can delete the folder, check the OS X Forum FAQ. I think it's one of the top three listed. Once you've done that, grab the CDs or DVD that came with the iMac. The first disk will have a folder called something like Install Applications and Classic. You're looking for Classic because, as you've already discovered, you cannot actually install OS 9.x. This will put stuff on you drive that looks exactly like an OS 9 installation, but is actually working a a different level. d00d, one of the mods here, explains it pretty well, but I'll just use something he hates to hear, "OS 9 emulation" layer.

It's what we call in geekdom, a compatibility layer. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Nope -- those aren't the disks that originally came with the Mac. Sounds like you have been presented with retail versions of OS X Panther (10.3) and OS 9.2.2. Nice of him/her, but not very useful in your case, since it appears your iMac was manufactured after 1/1/03 (after that date they would no longer boot into OS 9). If you can reach the seller, ask if s/he will send you the original CDs that came with it. If s/he claims that you should be able to use what was sent, find out when s/he bought the iMac originally. If prior to 1/1/03, we might be able to use what you have, but will have to do it a different way.

so basically im guessing i need to get hold of the os 9.2.?(1 or 2?) restore disks for the imac ?
i saw a set of 9 disks inc those restore disks sell on ebay the other day for $80!
iv been offered them for $75 inc shipping(to uk)
is this what i need ? and do you think thats worth it?
thanks for all ur help ppls! /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Grant, I suspect I'm just showing the depths of my
ignorance, but can't he simply put the OS9 CD in
the drive (but not try to boot it) and run the
installer?

The installer runs on OS 9. In order to run it in OS X, he'd need to use Classic, which is what he's trying to install. Catch-22.

Try contacting Apple and explaining the problem to them. I've heard several other cases like this in the forums where they've provided a proper set of disks for someone's second hand Mac.
