01. If you typed the provided code, into 'Script Editor', and on the line - 'tell application "Finder" to open item "System ... KeyboardViewerServer"' you pressed the 'return' key and then entered 'of the startup disk' onto the next line - yes, you will get a 'Syntax Error - Expected "end" but found "of".' message, when the 'Compile' button is clicked or you attempt to save the code as a script or applet.
The 'tell application "Finder" to open ..... of the startup disk' is to be entered onto a single line.
If you just select the text presented above and copy it, and then bring 'Script Editor' forward and paste the copied text into an untitled window - you will not receive any syntax errors when the 'Compile' button is clicked on, or you save the code as a script or applet.
02. If you want 'Key Caps' on your Panther based Mac, but without the desire of the international menu on the menu bar, as per using 'KeyViewerServer' - just go here -> 'http://codecenter.250free.com/KC.zip' for a copy of 'Key Caps'.

To obtain a copy of the above code in applet form then go here -> 'http://codecenter.250free.com/KV.zip'. When de-compressed - the applet [application] file 'KeyViewer' will appear. If you are worried about what 'KeyViewer' will do - just drag the applet onto 'Script Editor', and a window will open displaying the code - the same code as presented before.
03. I too use and prefer 'PopChar X'. It does not take up any menu bar space, and is quite easy to setup and use.

can you direct me somewhere so that I can fix this!!!
It annoys me that when running Quark 4 in classic, Command/Option/D makes the Dock pop up.
This command is usually for step and repeat.
Even if you disable the dock shortcut in the OSX preferences pane the dock still pops up in Quark 4 thru 6.11
Manually entering Command/Option/D under application shortcuts in the preferences pane still results in difficulties since EVEN with the Hide Dock shortcut UNCHECKED or disabled, the shotcuts pane comes up with "This new application shortcut cannot be used becuase it conflicts with an existing shortcut"!!!!!
@#!!!%#@!!!!!!
Any suggestions (without buying software)???
I notice that the classic keyboard control panel extension has the "Function" button disappear in Classic, so this is not an area that I can make changes.
Please help!!
[ Don't wish to buy quark 6 (quark 4.11 works fine) ]

The only big problem I have with both Key Caps and Keyboard Viewer (just Key Caps on mild steroids) is the lack of means to magnify the character you're trying to figure out or find. If the app's window were expandable and the keyboard layout enlarged with it, I would love it.
Back when Adobe serviced the Type On Call for purchasing fonts, the TOC CD included a utility they called "Key Caps" except it allowed a view of the entire glyph layout and if you clicked on a specific character, a separate window came up to show the glyph, and you could magnify it up to 3 times. That I liked.
Of course, all that is somewhat moot with the Character palette, since you can expand the size of glyphs in that.

There is a problem with Keyboard Viewer and the Symbol Font. It does not appear on the key caps. The standard Lucide Grande regular remains there. This seriously diminishes its utility when typing in Word since there is a simple CTR-Q shortcut in Word that enables the user to type individyual Symbol symbols from the keyboard. If you know the correct key, it works just fine. If you don't, it's a mess. In OS9, one could view the keyboard with the Symbol font on the keys.

You've entered your plea into an existing thread on an entirely different subject. How about copying it, then pasting it into a new thread using the "Post" button at the top of the main menu. You'll get better/faster results (and sorry I don't know the answer).

It puts a copy of the keyboard on your screen, in normal (lower) case. It changes when you press the function keys at the bottom, such as the Option key, or the shift key, or combinations of these and the Command key. This is very handy when you're looking for a special character, like etc., but don't know where they are. I use it often.

Am I the only one who thinks Keyboard Viewer is horrible?
It used to be insanely easy to show an end-user how to use Keycaps. Now I just hand out cheat sheets with the key combinations instead, like I do for Windows users. That's easier than getting them to dig through obscure menus. Even if they find Keyboard Viewer, the print is too small for the older folks to read. And why on Earth did they take away the feature where you could see what you typed?
With KeyCaps, it easily and naturallly taught users the way to type these characters without any hassle.

Umm, I'll be 69 in a couple of months, and have lifelong poor vision. You know, Coca Cola bottle bottoms for eyeglass lenses. Yet I don't have any trouble with it. Besides there's that little green bubble at the top left of KV's window (just like every other window in OS X) that expands it. As for the other complaint, I never used that feature in KeyCaps, so never really understood its usefulness. I liked KeyCaps, I like Keyboard Viewer. I don't/didn't find it difficult to set up.

Before I upgraded to Panther I used Carbon Copy Cloner to make a duplicate of my Jaguar installation. When I saw that Key Caps was "missing" from Panther, I copied it from my old Applications folder to my new Applications folder and have been using it ever since without a hiccup. I'm now using Mac OS X 10.3.4 and it still works without problems.

As this discussion developed yesterday, I too checked for it and found it in my Classic System Folder under Apple Menu Items. Likewise, if you still have your Jaguar CD set, you could use Pacifist to get into its .pkg files and copy KeyCaps if you want. It's available to anyone who really wants it -- I'm happy with Keyboard Viewer though, and that tiny flag doesn't bother me at all.

I'm glad we're discussing KV. My Keyboard Viewer has always been quite flaky (to the point where it's practically unusable). I enable the KV, and the window seems to display and hide itself at its own whim. I'm running OS 10.3.4, but have seen the problem ever since 10.2, I believe. Has anyone else encountered anything like this problem?

I have the same problem. it blinks ina nd out every 2 seconds. So far no luck tracing the problem to a specific app running or other mod.
