That's pretty weird. I have it running right now just to see if what you're saying happens, and the only thing I notice is that when I type (such as this right now), the keys I use flash. But that's what they're supposed to do, since it's a "keyboard viewer." Otherwise, it's steady as a rock and stays on top of whatever else is on screen. BTW, KV wasn't around in v.10.2 -- back then it was still KeyCaps, which worked like an application.

I have some more info on my KV problem. It turns out that the KV process is dying within 2-3 seconds of when it first comes up. When I click in a new window, it comes up again, but dies within 2-3 seconds. This repeats every time I click in a different window.
The problem appears to be unique to my TiBook. It does not manifest itself on my Sawtooth G4. I tried copying the component files from the desktop to the laptop and restarted the laptop, but this did not fix the problem. It's strange because I'm not having problems with anything else on my laptop.
Btw, I guess you're right about the KV being only in 10.3. I'm having trouble keeping up with all the changes in OS X. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

My problem occurs on my dual G5, but not on my older TiBook. There's a thread on Apple's support discussions that has some potential fixes, but none have worked for me.

I discovered the Keyboard Viewer but am disappointed in it because I find it unreliable. While most fonts display ok there are many, like Adobe's Carta where Keyboard Viewer doesn't display the correct characters. For Carta the correct characters are displayed in the top row (the number row) of the keyboard only. The remaining rows show the standard letters instead of Carta's symbols. In Classic mode the Key Caps utility will show this same font correctly.

Hmm, that's interesting. I pulled up Carta to check it, and on mine the symbols are there, but buried deep in the bottom of each key, i.e., only the top of each symbol is seen. All other fonts I have tried with KV though, have been just fine. None of the erraticism mentioned by others.

Grant,
Yep the top row that I do see is barely visible with the bottom of the characters cut off. The remaining rows, as I mentioned, are shown as the standard key characters. I wonder if it is because this version of Carta is one I got ages ago and it might need updating for some reason?

I didn't see anyone answer this post -- how in the world do you view Symbol fonts in the Keyboard viewer now??? Also, I have an applicaiton that seems to be driven by the same mechanism -- I can't type in a symbol font, or select it and convert it to a symbol, but I can successfully paste the symbol in from another applicaiton. anyone know what is going on -- this is frustrating!!!!
Thanks. John

Long dead thread, worthy revival. But I don't know the answer. I just pulled up a few symbol/dingbat fonts, and they showed the letter equivalents, not the symbols and characters. If you have Panther, you could view them in Font Book and perhaps print them out from it. As to your app that doesn't want to play right, what is it?

Thanks Grant G.
The applcation that won't create real symbols (even though, like the key caps viewer, it thinks the symbol font is selcted) is Notebook, a fabulous application from Cricus Ponies...

The problem with looking at the fonts in font book is that you still don't know how to access them. i.e. symbol-b is beta for sure, but how the heck do you know what to press for omega, etc. Anyway, I'm frankly shocked that this is still a problem. I love Apple, but seriously, do they know about this, and why isn't is fixed -- wisiwig isn't for this poor font at the moment. Then one has to ask, why do other apps have no problems with symbols????
Again, thanks!
