are these printers the same?

I can't find this question previously asked (so hope it's not a stupid one!) :
Are Canon printers given different model numbers in the US and the UK? I have a current Macworld magazine from the UK recommending the Canon i990, but can't find anything like that on the Canon USA site -- just something called the Canon i9900. Are they the same printer?
Also the Epson R800 is recommended and I can't seem to find it either... I've seen an R300.
