I've got a G4 400 and just bumped (hard) the CD/Burner
tray when it was open. Now it doesn't close and seems like I either broke
something inside or knocked it off it's track. I use this constantly
in my line of work for reading CD's and burning them. How difficult
is it to A). find a replacement internal unit and B). to install it? Since it's almost
time for an upgrade, would I be better just buying an external CD
burner? How about playing CD's? Is there an external that does
both?
Appreciate any suggestions.

Swapping out CD drives is pretty simple 4 screws and two cable connections. Check into upgrading to a CD-R/W DVD-R/W like the Pioneer DVR-107.
Check out Accelerate Your Macintosh for guides on swapping out drives.
