someone told me that idvd is not in jaguar... is that true??? if not, then what do i do before i upgrade since i plan on doing a clean install... do i back it up... and if so, just dragging the idvd folder to a cd-r will do the trick, nothing else required????? (new to mac, i think that it's great that we don't have to mess around with system files and apps spewing crap all over the hard drive, but it's still hard to beileve that just copying the app file will copy all content needed for the file to work)

thankx.....

No, iDVD is not included with Jaguar. You could just back it up on another disk but as I recall it is over 1 gig in size and would have to be compressed if burned to a cd. Of course, you could just copy it to a dvd instead. Don't you have the original install disks for your apps?

It is about 1 GB so I would hunt around for the iDVD install CD if I were you.

i can't find the idvd install on the disks that came with my g4-500 imac... it's not on a separate disc labelled idvd, at least.. let me check by actually seeing what files are on the cd's that came with my imac.... and i won't be able to find an original install for idvd if i don't ahve it with me... so my second option is copying... i dont mind burning it to a dvd, but will simply dragigng the idvd folder from my applications folder to the blank dvd and then burning it do the trick????

You will find that iDVD is on the system restore CDs that came with your Mac. This problem caught me when I decided to "rearrange" my new Mac back in July. Backed up my data, repartioned the HDDs and installed 9.2.2 and 10.1.5, then ran the applications CD. Fortunatly I had a spare partition, so I did the restore and moved iDVD over to the desired partition.

regards,

Michael

i was jsut going through the software restore cd's and thought that it might be on there... but there are 6 cd's in the set.... what else does it install for you... because i don't have a partition so i don't want all this extra junk to be on there.... i just want idvd... is there on option when installing for which components to do?????

why don't you just download the new version from http://www.apple.com/idvd/. it's only an 18.5mb download.

Only the update is available for download, not the app itself.

Copying the iDVD folder will work fine. I just did this a couple of weeks ago with my new dual gig Quicksilver when I completely reformatted the drive. Although I had an easier time of it because of my FireWire HD. Drag and drop will work fine. (Run the updater though.)

Just for clarification, the iDVD app by itself is only 774 mb and the tutorial folder is another 400 or so.

Also, you can retrieve programs (not just iDVD) using a work around found in the Feb Macworld. Copy the .dmg files off the sys restore to a folder, then mount it using disk copy. I can post more detailed instructions if needed.

Aside - Hey d00d, why not make this part of the OS X FAQ?

weather_squid... thanks so much for your post... that sounds like the best and the coolest solution... and philbert, thanks to you too for clarifying the copy option... but since i downloaded the 2.1 update, the idvd app file is now around 844mb... it won't fit onto a cd and it would be a damn shame to waste a $5 dvd on something that would only be used once... getting back to the system restore disks, can you please give me step by step on how to do that... and it works fine wihtout any probelms??? what else is on those disks??? thanx...

just one more thing.. is there any other app that came with 10.1 that isn't included in jaguar that i would need to know about??? i think that this would be a nice addition to the FAQ... upgraders need to know what will be missing since natrually everyone would expect more and not less after a $129 upgrade, and eventually freak out...

Don't do a clean install. I have a FP imac w/ super drive. I did a clean install to find out that iDVD was not in Jag. Contacted Apple and they had me re-install OS9, then X, to get iDVD back. I then did an update.

Apple does not have any other way of putting iDVD back on your computer (unless you want to spend $19.95 for the stand alone program)

You may be able to get the program from the 6 restore disks, but Apple was not able to walk me through this.

Again, UPDATE--don't do a clean install.

Sorry about the delay, had to visit Saturn. The rings are quite nice this time of year. images/icons/grin.gif

1) Make a folder on your desktop. Doesn't matter what you name it.

2) Put the first System Restore disk in. Open the Configuration folder. There should be a .dmg file in there (name escapes me, but it is the only one).

3) Drag that .dmg file to the folder on the desktop. Do this for each disk. This will take a bit, as each file is huge (+500MB).

4) When you have all the disks done, open Disk Copy and mount the first disk. This will allow you to see all the applications.

5) Simply drag iDVD out and put it on your hard drive. images/icons/smile.gif

Hope this works -
