Hey bbrown, glad it's all working now. I stopped posting since I was out of ideas /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif One issue with FINK, since Jaguar days, has been keeping up with both the FINK resources, and changes to OS X (Apple's X11 going to stable release, changes to gcc and the developers tools, etc). Now that you're current, and all is working, be sure to run FINK selfupdate every few weeks, to stay current.
As you learned, one nice thing about FINK is (aside from X11, either Apple's or XFree86) is everything goes into /sw.
As to KDE, clearly many folks have it running under OS X, but it's not problem free. If you are just interested in learning about it, then go for it. But, as I said before, it really adds nothing to OS X (other than overhead), and really is not needed to run UNIX/Linux applications, including X applications. I have dozens of such apps (CLI, and several X apps, plus Java apps, compiled from source) I use, but I see no need for an additional desktop manager/environment, which is all KDE is.
If you really want to learn the UNIX underpinnings of OS X, forego KDE, check out some of the apps in FINK (or the many available that are not in the FINK trees). You could start by just modifying X11 - I use rxvt (heavily customized) for my X terminal, for example.
Anyhow, glad GIMP is working - cheers!

I found a very good resource for working with Fink and OSX.
It is a book called Fun with Fink.
It is available as a free download in PDF format and is 21 megs in size. It is very helpful for those who are interested in things Fink.
Available from http://www.funwithfi...m/announce.html
Good luck.
