I'm wondering if I have any redundant or unnecessary files in my iTunes folder. along with the iTunes music folder, it contains the following files: iTunes 4 music library, iTunes 4 music library (old), iTunes music library, and iTunes music library.xml. Can I get rid of any of them without losing my music?

Your music is not stored in any of these files.
Your music is store in the '~/iTunes/iTunes Music folder or the one you've specified in the iTunes preferences.
The files you mention tell iTunes WHERE the music is stored and contain some more info like track counts etc. So if you delete them (or at least the one that's not labeled 'old') you will still have your music on your hard disk but iTunes won't know about it. The files are rather small anyways - it's best not to bother with those.
hope that helped

There are no extraneous files in the Music folder, save for actual mp3s that are in another location with all the rest of your mp3s - a time when you hadn't the FW drive connected where the files normally are transferred to, is one possibility. Other than that, all the files (old excepted - unless you go back to 4.2, I believe, in which case it will be required to allow you access to all the songs you have.) are required, and you've nothing to worry over.
