Its there now.
Sorry I see now that the update is still only ver2.2 for the 3rd gen iPod. Its only the 4th gen thats gets all the new features.

Read Before You Install iPod Updater
iPod Updater 2004-07-15 includes iPod Software 3.0 for use with iPods with a Click Wheel. iPod Updater 2004-07-15 also includes the latest software versions for iPod mini and the third generation iPod.
With iPod Software 3.0, you can:
Shuffle Songs with one click (using the Shuffle Songs item in the main menu)
Create multiple On-The-Go playlists
Delete songs from On-The-Go playlists
Select reading playback speed for audiobooks
Hear audible click user interface feedback in headphones
Charge via USB connection
Enjoy improved playback performance
For more information about iPod, go to http://www.apple.com/support/ipod.
iPod Updater 2004-07-15 contains the same software versions as iPod Updater 2004-04-28 for all other iPod models.
iPod 3.0 Software is not compatible with other models of iPod, including original scroll wheel and touch wheel iPods, and iPod mini.
iPod Software 2.2 and iPod Software 1.2 should not be used with iPod with Click Wheel.

Apple Computers, etc, etc.

Hi
In reply to:

The Mac Observer: Are you releasing a software update for older iPods to add features like Shuffle Play and re-organizing of menus like what are now found on the new iPod?
Greg Joswiak: No, we're not. The fourth-generation iPod isn't just different on the outside, it's different on the inside too. It's got a different hardware platform underneath and that's what we developed this software for. We're not holding it back, it's just a new design to take advantage of this hardware that we have here. We could have added these additional features to older iPods, but it would be another product effort. It would require us to create a new set of software on the old platform that we haven't decided we're going to do. We haven't ruled it out, but right now there's not an effort underway to do that.

That kinda sucks. I mean, how hard would it be to add a shuffle option to the main menu?

along the same lines, i still don't understand why moving "shuffle" to the root level menu is such a big deal.

It's not a big deal. I'm a little miffed about it (and wrote a weblog entry to vent).

I reckon that they should bring out a new game. Tetris it should be for the 3rd gen iPods. U could use the touch wheel for spinnning the shape and hit the middle button for making the shape go down fast + they should ad high scores for each game and also continue game like a mobile phone.

If you used the touch wheel for spinning the shape, how would you be able to pick where the shape lands?
Touch wheel would move the shape back and forth, middle button would spin, hold down middle button to drop.
