it has been over 5 years that my ibook graphite has served me well with absolutely no problems. but it is time to buy a new ibook.
any recommendations? (especially since i am student)
on a side note, i have an external USB floppy disk and an Epson 777 printer that have also been with me a long time. would these devices be compatible with a new ibook? or would i have to purchase new ones?
i really don't know.
thanks!!
peace

I did call the Apple.com number and asked about the education prices/rebates. He told me they don't have any $ off rebates, only if $200 if you buy an ipod too. Maybe the price at the site is already discounted? I will go and check it out using the steps you suggested at the site.
I wanted to know if I could order the ibook and ipod at bestbuy online and the apple rep said no, I can only order them from him. The offer stated at any authorized participating retailer. I looked and didn't see bestbuy.com listed as one, but I think their stores were listed. My BB doesn't have one.
How slow are they if you order through applestore.com?
I'm looking at the ibook g4 9388 14.1" 933 Mz $999
the g4 14.1" 1Ghz $1299 maybe $1199?
the g4 1.2 Ghz $1499
Is the 9388 missing something important that the 1 Ghz has? I don't need a lot of hard drive space. Just want a bit of speed for multitasking and surfing.
One more thing. Is it true that the ibook g4 1.0 Mhz has a permanent 128mb ram and one you can remove to put in a 256mb ram? I wanted 512 ram but really wanted to only have to buy and add another 256!
TIA for any help here guys!

I wonder how I can find out how they did the ram in these models, two 128 or one 256. I guess I'll call their 800# and ask.

let me just tell you that with the apple store itself, i have had no problems.
BUT on some orders, they used Fedex HOME Delivery.
for example,
good : i ordered an ibook on friday 7/23. apple store shipped it that very day! /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
really bad: they used Fedex Home-signature delivery, and since 7/24 my ibook has been sitting in a fedex facility in sacramento, just miles from my house! the online tracking system is not really up-to-date. and just trying to contact a representative is a triumph in itself. i have been trying to schedule a "pickup" for my package, but gave up. my package missed its delivery date. recently they left a note on my door, but didn't bother to really knock or ring the bell.
(sorry, i am a little irritated since i had to take off work)
but to be fair, i have ordered others devices/hardware from apple store, and they have been very fast. on those occasions, i noted that Fedex express or ground system was used instead.
i really don't know why applestore chooses one fedex system over the other, but its choice definitely will affect the time and experience of your delivery.
hope this helps. sorry for the rant.
take care.

If I were you, I'd get the 1.3GHz with 1GB DDRram and 60 GB hd. The price won't be too different but the newest and fastest one with the biggest hard drive is always going to be the best value. To upgrade the ahrdware afterwards will cost you more and won't necessarily have the Apple warranty to back it up, unless you send it to Apple in which case it will cost you an arm and a leg.
If the credit card will stand it, go for the top spec and biggest screen. LOL

Get the 1.2GHZ or 1.3GHZ machine with the 60GB Hd and add 512MB of PC2700DDR sdram at least. I wouldn't go for the 933 version for all the reasons, the other posters mentioned. 14" screen is a definite must, espeically for graphics or watching DVDs. I'd recommend the DVD RW version over the combo but the price may be too much for a student.
You'll be surprised how quickly the space on the HD gets swallowed up by applications etc. From the word go you'll be down 9GB of space or so, leaving only 31GBs for other apps etc. If you have to keep a lot of school stuff on the Mac. space will soon become a premium.
Have fun, though. The ibook looks really great, doesn't it.

Easy to say, of course, when I own a 1.33 Powerbook. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I'm also looking at the ibooks. I would be totally new to macs. I'm so glad I found this board. Been driving myself crazy researching them.

Go to apple.com/store.
Click on the Education link on the left hand side.
Click on "Find your college or university",
Choose your college.
Now you can see the education prices and get an iBook G4 for $999, and a 14" for $1,199. Good deals /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Even a PowerBook for $1,399, including wireless, bluetooth, a huge hard drive, a 64 MB graphics card, etc, etc...
