For remote backup I need to wake two networked Macs running panther to an external HD hung off my machine (dual g4 1.25 gig running panther.4). I use "wakeonlan" to wake the machines. This allows the now-awake networked mac's crontabed rsync command to do it job. However, if the remote machines "go to sleep" via the Energy Saver time function I can not wake the computers over the network using "wakeonlan".
However, if I use the Sleep command from the Apple pull down menu I can wake the computers using "wakeonlan" but only if I send the command before the Energy Saver set time. I do have "Wake for Ethernet network administration access" checked.
This must be some deeper sleep? The remote machines are a dual G4 1.25gig and a dual G5 ~2 gig both running panther.4.

i'll assume you are using something like WakeUp 1.11 to wake your sleeping G5.
in my experience, i have no problems waking up the G5 from it's power saver initiated sleep... however, it seems that with no local keyboard or mouse input within a moment of doing so, it falls right back to sleep. this can be seen at the desk as well. say it goes to sleep on PM. i touch the shift key on the keyboard to wake it, it wakes up and presents me with the "enter password" screen or whatever. if i do not touch the keyboard or mouse any further, in just a few seconds, she falls back to sleep.
i've never figured out why this does so, but it does....
i use SSH to the box to do stuff, so to get things done , i had to act quickly, before the box sleeps again...
i suggest that this may be what you are experiencing. in some cases, i litterlaly have to be ready with a terminal with 'ssh -l username 192.168.0.45' ready for entry right after waking the G5 just to get logged in to do stuff.
a workaround i have used is to install OSXVNC on the G5 and VNC Thing on my remote. If i wake it up, then log in right away with VNC, she simulates "local input" and remains awake. even if i then go to my SSH actions, i've essentially given her the no-doze required to stay awake, until of course the PM time limit is up again.
There is great debate about ever letting a G5 sleep in the first place... seems very problematic.
this is just a minor nuance for me, but seems like a huge deal to a lot of other ppl.
