Hi
I have just purchased a used b&w g3 300 MHz with 192 MB ram.
And I would like to know if it is fast enough to burn DVDs (before i rush out to buy a internal dvd-burner)?

if you don't get a GB of RAM, you are going to want to jump out a window, unless the B&W goes first...

Oh i forgot to mention that this g3 is my secondary computer. My primary is an eMac. So i don't care if i have to burn the dvds at 1 or 2 x speed. I purchased this computer to act as an file server, and it would be really nice if it could burn dvds too (freeing my emac from the task).

If you're looking to upgrade the processor, check out the G4/600 chip from OWC. I put it in my B&W a few weeks ago, and the results are quite dramatic. iPhoto is now almost twice as fast, as are all my other applications. The most noticeable increase is in my SETI At Home. On the G3/400 chip, it would take 18-22 hours to complete a work unit. Now I can do it in 8-12 hours.
You may also want to consider upgrading the video card as well. The 16MB card just isn't enough.

I believe iDVD requires a G4 or G5.

I was planning on using toast to burn the dvds.

G3/300 isn`t enough (even with toast). G4/400 should be enough (maybe), but i`d stick with the G4/600 suggestion.

I have just checked out roxios hp, and they say that it will work on a g3 or faster chip. They just recommend g4 for video encoding...
