Panther on iMac DV500SE

Ok...this question has been asked before, I'm sure of it..but I could not find the answer. So, here goes...I have the iMac listed above, the DV500SE, with 1GB RAM. On the system I am running OSX Panther, and it is SLOW. Internet is slow, load times, etc. I am mainly a PC (I know, I know) person, and this machine is my wife's. She loves the thing, but gets extremely frustrated when the thing bogs down. She's using it mainly for OfficeX, internet stuff and E-mail. If ANYONE could help me out with any tweaks, or tweak-related websites, or anything at all that I can do to make this run a little faster. I know it can. Also, as point of reference, it would be the same speed with OSX 10.1 that came pre-installed on the system. So, any help is greatly appreciated,
Thanks in advance,

A couple of simple things, although that iMac is never going to scream. Repair permissions using Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Select the OS X volume in the left side, then Repair Permissions will enable itself -- disregard Verify Permissions. Next, get OnyX and run the Automate panel with everything checked. Except prebinding, which Panther (OS X 10.3) does automatically. Run all of the sequences in Automate. These are all things that the system does itself, but the Mac must be left on and not sleeping for them to happen. Let us know if any of this helps. BTW OnyX is free.

Panther is going to be slow on a G3. While your system meets minimum system requirements, the 1GB memory is very helpful. It will run fairly slowly. Some things you can do to speed up the operation.
Run fsck: Boot into single user mode by restarting and hold down cmd+s and wait till the text stops scrolling and type fsck -y -f if the disk was modified repeat,s if the disk is okay type reboot.
Download cocktail from Versiontracker and run the cron scripts.
That stuff will tweak your system to optimal running configuration.

Thank you both for the suggestions. I do know that it'll never be a screamer, but, it's pretty darn slow right now. And, like I said, I come from a PC background where there is always a process to stop or a cache to empty, so I'm still in that mentality. I am going to try both of the suggestions, then let you know what happened with everything. I just wanted to say thanks for the help.

OnyX and Cocktail do almost exactly the same thing. One is free, the other costs about ten bucks. The free one has a somewhat more complicated interface, so I generally use Cocktail. BTW, both will also repair permissions, so my suggested method is actually redundant in that regard, but it's nice to know how to do it. If you decide on Cocktail, instead of looking for "Automate," run "Pilot" instead. Again, no prebinding necessary.

I'm acutally running OnyX as we speak. The 10.3.x version is the one I needed, and it seems pretty straight-forward. It's still on "Repairing Permissions" so I'm hoping that means we goofed up a lot on program installs. I'll let you all know as soon as it stops running.
Thanks again,

I never even hinted that it would be slow; I said "it would not scream." I'll back that up with either of the two Macs listed in my sig if you would like to make a little wager ...
