Slow Printing From Safari

Printing from my any of machines in Safari to my ancient HP Color LaserJet 5M (I keep it because I can work on it and get toner for $10 a bottle) is slow I mean 20 to 30 minutes. I save the same page as a PDF and print time is normal. Safari prints at normal speed to my Epson 850. Since it is the same with my desktop and both laptops I am left to conclude it some about Safari and my 5M.
Any ideas on why Safari and only Safari prints so slow to my 5M and only my 5M?
