Ok, here is the deal. I currently have a 17" imac 800 (lamp imac). It is connected to the world using an airport card on our wlan. I have just ordered a 667 tibook, however, the airport card that was going to go into that computer has become unavailable due to extenuating circumstances (ran out of money). I am going to get one in a month or so, but until then, the only way of connecting to the internet is the imac. Now, I seem to remember hearing that it is possible to use a computer connected to the internet by airport to "SHARE" your internet connection via ethernet with another computer. Is that true, and if so how does it work?
That would be very helpful if I could do that. Thanks.

Assuming you're using Panther on the iMac:
1) Go to System Preferences -> Sharing
2) Go to the Internet Sharing tab
It should be fairly self explanatory at that point. Write back if it's not.

Yep, got panther.
So doing that, would it be possible to connect a router to the imac then and share to the entire router?
But other than that, I have heard that the powerbook has a smart ethernet port, so all I should need to do is run a basic patch cable between the two computers and it should link up perfectly, right?

will it be noticeable?

It should not slow the connection down unless both computers are accessing the net at the same time.
EDIT: Added the not.

For the record, it works perfectly. Turn on internet sharing on the imac and connect the cable. Don't even need to touch the powerbook settings, 5 seconds later its online. Gotta love apple!
