I have had my ipod 3rd gen(10 gig) since february 2004. I have been using it regularly, almost everyday.
I would say I get a full discharge almost once everyweek, if not more.
The problem is that when its fully charged it lasts just under 4 hours, and that is 4 hours of music listening, no game playing, or usage of the backlit.
Almost a month ago, my ipod frose and the screen got caught stuck on the do not disconnet screen, and was like that till battery lost power the next day. The ipod was giving me problems so I thought maybe I should upgrade the firmware, since I had never done it since purchase.
Now I am stuck with an ipod 7 months old that has lost 50% of its battery usage.
Is it a common problem with gen 3 ipods ?? or is this simply an isolated case ?
Thx

I, too, have been having problems with my 3G iPod. While it lasts 8 hours when playing music, the most frustrating thing is that even when I'm not using it, it loses power. I charge it up but because I don't use it every day (blasphamy, I know), when I turn it on after a couple of days, the battery has gone flat. Where is this battery power going? Surely if it's not in use there is no power drain on the battery??
I'm considering returning it to Apple, but I'm not sure that I have a legitimate warranty claim.

I'm not an iPod fan, yet I have one and it is one neat gadget.
The battery, I believe, runs the internal clock and only Apple knows what else.
I've checked the battery when not in use, and from one week to another, the loss to me is minimal.
And what happens, is that you should avoid constant discharges. Only about once per month to keep working.
Also, maybe the rechargable battery is beginning to lose its power like all others after 18 months.

Thx for the replies
Problem is, I use my ipod and notice the lost of battery charge right after I unplug it from a full charge.
For example, this morning, I took the ipod with me. It have charged all night from a dead battery. So I plug it into my car stereo, like usual, and using it 2 hours all morning driving to different spots, I notice coming home it was already half empty.
The ipod was used at most 2 hours, not longer. Also battery is technically only 7 and a half months old.
Even my old minidisc rectangle battery that I used for 3 years, still keeps its original charge, and its a battery that sells for 40$ canadian.
I am curious, if apple can cover this kind of trouble, or is it part of normal wear?
I have a 4g coming next month so i wouldnt mind sending the old 3g to apple, but only if its worth it.

Your battery seems defective to me. I would contact Apple while you are still under warranty.
Run this iPod Battery Test first.
