I have a Powerbook G3 (don't know which model...got it in 2000 or 2001) running OS9. I have the standard internal DVD-Rom drive. It used to work fine, now it seems that CDs (audio or CD-ROM) do not mount on the desktop, nor can I boot the computer from CD-ROMs with system software. The funny thing is that DVDs seem to work fine.
I checked to make sure that all of the necessary extensions were in my extensions folder. They were. I saw something online about resetting the PRAM, which I did. It didn't help. I read a little about resetting the PMU, as well. My computer matches another symptom of a PMU needing to be reset: The battery suddenly stopped charging months ago. Now I have to use the power adaptor all the time. I've already tried resetting the PMU once today, but it didn't seem to work. I'm about to shut down and try again, but wanted to post this first to see if anyone has any advice--just in case I still can't make it work.
This sucks, and I'd really appreciate any help anyone could offer. I've bought a bunch of equipment to turn my aging computer into a music recording studio, and it seems like it was all a waste if I can't even use my CD-ROM drive to install software, etc.
Thanks in advance!

Well, after posting the above message, I shut down my computer, pulled out the power adpator, held down ctrl-shft-option-power, plugged the adaptor back in and rebooted. As for everything I wrote earlier...
Nevermind.
The CD drive seems to be working now.
In response to your questions, one of the CDs I was trying (Norton Utilities) was netiher a CD-RW nor copy-protected. It just seemed that, for whatever reason (apparently PMU-related), the drive wasn't recognizing CDs.
Hopefully, this is the end of my story. Maybe this post will serve to help others who find themselves in a similar situation.
Thanks to all for your prompt replies!
