I've got minimal experience with games but tried playing WingNuts - the free download through .Mac. Playing it on a PB must put significant demands on the processor because the fan always comes on at high speed. Does this (over?)heating have any significant long-term adverse effects on the processor's life?

Not as much as what would happen if the fan isn't there. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I've been gaming on PowerBooks for years, through three separate models of PowerBooks -- all of which are still working, to the best of my knowledge. So I think I can safely say that gaming doesn't shorten the life of your PowerBook.
What I've found is that my 1.5GHz 17-inch PowerBook's fan comes on most frequently if it's resting on an insulating surface -- like my lap, or fabric -- compared to a tabletop or some other surface more likely to distribute heat.
