CD's in, App doesn't see it!

Some apps in OS 10.2 seem to be unable to see that the CD is in the drive. I have a few programs, mostly games, that tell me to "insert the CD". The stupid CD is inserted and is plainly available in the Finder. The same apps (non carbon versions) work fine when booted into OS 9. If I run the non-carbon app, in Classic - it DOES NOT work either.
