It gets my approval. Its really amazing that they put a G5 in something that small. This tells me that power consumption is what limits the G5 from the laptop.
I am looking at getting the 20''. How much performance difference do you think their will be between the models? Are these good gaming machines?
Thanks.
EDIT: I wonder how much the screen differs from the Cinema displays. I noticed the 20'' iMac costs $1,899. The 20'' Cinema display costs $1,299. That means only $600 worth of computer! 2/3 of the cost is in the screen.

Hi
Maybe fair but that's probably about it. They should have a 128MB GFFX5200 minimum probably for the iMac and Power Mac.
See below.
Well...I s'pose I'll post my thoughts.
Appearance: It may appear more pleasurable in person but my initial reaction was...Ick...I liked the iMac G3s and iMac G4 looks quite well, even initially. I think, it's that bottom plain white section that just doesn't do it for me.
Features: Not too bad. I'm glad they somewhat crippled the system bus (1/3 ratio instead of the Power Macs 1/2). See more below on this "issue." Come on Apple. I think, it best to finally start 512MB as a minimum in all systems and go to 1GB for the higher ends instead of this 256MB and 512MB. I completely understand the consumer what-cha-mu-call-its but 256MB is cutting the bottom line with simple things like web surfing, email, etc. Plus, we're Apple users, we deserve MORE.
Overall: I believe, Apple is really pushing the consumer desktop lineups too hard. Not to say that restricting technology is a great choice but the eMac invaded the iMac's demographic and now the iMac needs to push so close the the Power Mac's demographic that the separation is nonexistent and really dices up the sales for certain models in the "in betweens." I mean, realistically...What consumer needs a G5 processor and architecture?
Price: Seems fair.
Related to the iMac G5: I've said it more than once and I'll say it again. If you can produce this give me, the "prosumer", a PowerBook G5 for goodness sakes. I've been saying the heat isn't really the death-defying issue but rather battery issues. They wouldn't have a problem getting a PowerBook G5 out the door but the PowerBook G4 battery times are hitting so close to minimum that the G5 architecture would drop it just enough, 2-4 hours or a bit less, that it will look not so well. Come on. The new iMac is 2" thick with an LCD, LCD backlight, full size hard drive, full size RAM, G5 microprocessor, power supply, and more. I can't see what would be extremely difficult for a G5 PowerBook outside of a better battery.
Sorry...More of a rant than anything, I guess.

Not necessarily. The unit still looks at though it's at least two inches thick. There is also a large empty white space under the screen which provides additional space for the cooling system. I would think that it would be about three times the volume of the Powerbook. It's certainly an improvement (in terms of space saving) from the Powermacs, but the PB still seems to be a substantial engineering obstacle.
PS. Its a nice machine.

eh...
still really expensive, and I absolutely hate the slot-loading drive. 4X DVD burning? These should really be 16X DVD-R drives, but they have to be run slower vertically, and I'm not sure what the fastest slot-loader available is anyway.
It's neat, but very impractical.

Hmm, it's OK I guess. It certainly won't be winning any beauty pageants. I think the use of all the white makes it look more like an eMac at a glance front on and the 256MB is woefully inadequate these days.
I was hoping for an aluminium surround to go with the new displays. I can't see this bringing iMac sales back to the state they were previously. That said, I may change my mind when I see one in the flesh. The VR tour on the Apple website dies it little justice.

Hi
I'd have to highly assume they are using the Pioneer UJ-825, currently being used in the PowerBooks.

I think games will play fine on these machines. My PB plays UT2k4 and COD well and I can only imagine that these puppies with will be fine.
As for the design, its interesting, In one sense not quite revolutionary and elegant as the original FP iMac but incredible in its own right. I wonder how good it is with heat dissapation, I now see why apple had issues with trying to nail down that issue.
As a recent G5 owner, I'm not in the market but if I didn't own the PM, I would definitly order one of these beauties.
