I don't think that's a problem, if you can abide a bit of a delay in getting it. My friend bought his G4 iMac from MacZone online, and insisted it be maxed out in RAM, meaning the lower chip also had to be a 512. No problem: The Zone ordered it for him and he had it within 10 days.

A couple of thoughts:
While the iMac G5 does look like it was made for wireless keyboards and mice, it's important to remember that a lot of people don't want a wireless keyboard or mouse. Dealing with batteries sucks. Also, the lattency inherent in a wireless mouse makes it a poor choice for gaming (not that the iMac is a phenominal gaming machine, but with a video card upgrade it'd be pretty damn good.)
So the idea of making wireless "standard" strikes me as somewhat iffy -- even if it's true that the aesthetics of the machine will take a hit once you plug a bunch of stuff into it.
Not, it's not as beautiful as the iLamp, but the price/performance ratio is night and day better. (The iLamp had a very poor price/performanec ratio. The iMac G5 has a very good one.)
And even still, I won't make a final aesthetics call until I see one in person.

This is the first time I have been glad I have the previous version. My "iLamp" can still boot into Classic (not that I ever do /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif ) but it's nice to know that I can, and I agree that the new G5 iMac just isn't as fun to look at. Now if I could just get that G5 speed....

I agree, especially considering the eMac was essentially a cheaper, CRT iMac with a design that was slightly less cool. Now the G5 gives the iMac the edge it needs to boost sales.

What ship dates do folks have for the iMac G5? I ordered on the 3rd from the Apple Store and the estimated ship date is 10/4/04 for the computer. They cheerfully sent me my AppleCare plan right away though I got it on the 7th. I know they are saying mid September, but I want to see if the Apple Store is actually telling anyone a date in mid September.

My initial reaction was concern over the balance and CG (center of gravity) of the base, and how stable the unit is. I'm sure they have taken this matter seriously, and it's likely as stable a computer as can be.

I just went to the Apple Store Ginza in Tokyo to buy an iPod for a friend of mine (way cheaper than in Europe, and I also was surpised to see plenty of iPod mini on stock), and one of the sales there asked me, if I had seen already the new iMac G5. They just got it today and had it on display, so I went to have a look (and hand) on it.
I can truely tell you that the stability will be no problem. I tried to push it over to either one side, but the stand is so wide nothing happend. I can hardly imagine this thing fell over, even in a major earthquake (but like everything else it might jump & rock of the table).
It was only the basic configuration with 1.6 Ghz and 256MB RAM installed, but it was way speedier than my old trusty TiPowerBook 500 Mhz with 1GB RAM. I didn't had too much time since I had to rush back into the office, but starting several applications like iDVD, iTunes, Preview, System Profiler, Safari at the same time was pretty quick.
Also, turning the whole thing sideways was no problem at all, it seemed to be very light in fact. The only problem might be you scratching your desk /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif
That said, if you like the design I am sure it will be a very satisfactory machine /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Cheers from Tokyo,

I am waiting to see them in person at the Apple Store. Then I will decide whether to send my letter for one to Santa or to the Easter Bunny. I want to see the dimensions of the 17" and the 20" and how the width of the computer relates to the width of the keyboard before I determine which size I prefer.
Also, I would like to see some feedback on the Apple site from users to learn about teething problems on the new model. I prefer Revision B models to introductory models when I purchase Apple products... /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
