I know Apple has priority in ordering, but many do business with ClubMac and other vendors. Here is a note I recieved 9/14/04 from Joe McNeeley in sales about their inventory for ClubMac ETA. And he's always treated me very well/fare.
Hello Doug,
Been having a pretty good summer, could use a little more Apple inventory to
sell, been out of all iMac's for awhile, eMac's have been in short supply,
G5 towers are just dribbling in, at least Apple has finally sending the mini
iPods in good quantities. Aug. and Sept. are all tight months for Apple
inventory.
Apple has been saying that they expect to start shipping the new iMac the
last week of Sept, but I got notice today that a few are already on their
way here.
Over the last 24 hours, Apple has shipped us the following iMac G5
inventory:
2 iMac G5 17" 1.6GHz
95 iMac G5 17" 1.8GHz
63 iMac G5 20" 1.8GHZ
We expect to receive these shipments in Memphis later this week or early
next week.
Not many, but it is a start.
Best regards,
Joe X7645

Bingo! I really love the idea of this new iMac. But Apple has gone halfway to a really mind blowing beauty. First, the iMac should never, ever be sold with less than 512 meg for a great multi-tasking computer like that.
Second, the beauty of the design exist only one time: Before it is used since in use wires will run on the side, up and down and all over the place. Apple should have had a ribbon incorporated in the aluminum leg and in the back at the bottom a cable connected to a bar with the ports to dangle behind the desk. Then the beauty of the design would make everybody salivate forever.

I agree about the cabling, but I wonder if all the cables could be run through the power cord hole in the back to reduce clutter. That would seem to be inconvenient for cords you intend to unplug from time to time, but then again how often does that happen (I tend to use my keyboard USB ports for that anyway)? But more importantly, I haven't yet seen any "marketing pics" of iMacs in that configuration; there might be a good reason why they're not done that way.

I went down to the Apple Store The Grove yesterday and took a look at the iMacs. The cabling issue is not as big a deal as everybody seems to think it is. They had bundled the cables and were running them down by the neck, and they didn't get in the way or feel clutter-y at all.
So far, so good. If those benchmarks are to be believed I really want one!

We have an older mac clone, had it almost 8 years now. It replaced a b/w Classic II that we had for quite a few years. We decided the new 1.8 20" IMac would be a nice upgrade. We're very excited and I know my macs pretty well, but I'm afraid with the arrival of our new mac I'll feel like I just climbed out of the cave. I could use some help or suggestions that anyone may have. Is there a way to bring any of my old text files to the new mac? (Quicken, Word, Claris, jpgs., etc.) I have a zip drive with a scsi port, but nothing with a usb port. I am also having a difficult time understanding the difference between wireless methods, bluetooth, airport, and ethernet. We bought the new Brother MFC 8440 printer and I would like to hook up to it wirelessly, but I am not sure what I need and if it is worth the cost. I will be using the modem for awhile but we are considering getting directwave and I understand I should have some type of wireless ethernet connection for that as well?
Thanks!
Ed

Anacondan,
I think that is a topic for a new thread actually. Why not repost your entire question separately? You've asked several interesting questions that deserve to be seen by users who can respond to them and not just people who see an iMac G5 thread that interests them.

I first had an Apple computer back in the early 90's. Cant remember what it was (probably powerpc) but there was also a PC/WIndows function (smilar to virtual PC). Then we had a black apple laptop powerbook? I then stopped using apple computers in 96 when PC became more popular with school work.
Fast forward to 2004. iPod Era... got mine in May and lost it on a recent trip to the States /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
July 2004, purchased a powerbook 12" and I fell in love with the Apple again. Everything is just so user friendly, although it took some time to get use to the OSX. I've been taking the powerbook to work and all my colleagues comment on wow an apple! and the request to play around with it has been overwhelming.
September 2004. Placed an order for 20" iMac. The thing that drew me towards the machine was just the one power cord neccessary for everything. Unlike PCs there's always a cluster of cables at the back of the desk. Alhtough I do admit 256mb is a bit cheapo for todays standard, keep in mind a lot of PC come with 256mb ram standard as well.
I hear everyone saying how the graphics card is not good enough. to be honest it's more than enough for me( but i guess it could be bette by allowing upgrade). I use the MAC for work purpose and the occassional photoshop dreamweaver applications. If i wanted to play games i would go for a PC. The library of games for the Mac is something to laugh at.
Im forking out extra to configure a dedicated gaming PC and dual layer DVD writer with TV viewer.
So that's my opinion. Apple has done a great job with the iMac. Its practically cord free, space saving and good bang for your bucks. Apple has struck home with the iMac and im sure a lot of PC users would migrate to Apple.
