If they designed a cover for it and it could close like a brief case with a handle, it would be something you could take with you if you wanted. It wouldn't be a substitute for a powerbook, but it would be portable.
Just thinking out loud... /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

doesn't seem to address any pressing user requirements
So what exactly are your "pressing user requirements"? It's a G5! It can be built to order with up to 250GB SATA drive! It can hold up to 2GB RAM! What the heck is all of your problems? /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

heh. it's funny to see the parallels between the g5 imac and the original 1984 macintosh. the 1984 mac had a handle built into the top, and i think it was even marketed as "portable."

I can speak from experience though when I say that many people who have still not come to see the light are amazed by this machine. I showed the pics to several of my windows using friends at school and one of them was instantly converted! He is gonna buy one later on /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Even the other guys were very impressed; they agreed it was a very nice looking and well priced unit. A 17" g5 for 1300...not even windows type machines are that competively priced, even if its not upgradeable, I would say a comparable machine with that type monitor and 64 bit processor would be well over 1500.
Good job apple

"damn. that thing actually looks.... upgradeable!" and it turns out, it's the most upgradeable imac ever. i'm won over. it's super compact, super functional, and even quite upgradeable. well done apple.
Exactly, gyroscope4.
Seems like pretty much everything could be user upgraded (except for the speakers, case, stand -- am I missing something else?). In addition to having an OS that's heavily accessible, the ability to open up the iMac and poke around inside might make this "consumer" Mac much more attractive to a brand new crowd of *NIX folks and "geeks" that like to tinker.
Who'd a thunk it?

-- although, I should note that I agree with a lot of posts that a better vid card right out of the box would have been a nice option. I really do wonder if space/heat issues were as much to blame as penny pinching on Apple's part?

But oddly enough, all the PC users I've talked to seem to love it. In that case, my congrats to Apple! /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

One of the big questions for me is how quiet it is.
Oh, what am I saying? I don't have the money for it anyway. But performancewise and pricewise, I think this computer kicks ass.
Although a BTO video card bump would be nice for gamers, and FW800 wouldn't hurt.

One of my friends keeps his PC in his bedroom. He has a tower, printer and a CRT monitor. I told him about the new iMac. I showed him a few pics of the new iMac and I can honestly say he was drooling (I'd drool too, but I ran out of drool after I got my PowerMac G5). My friend said he wouldn't mind having something like that. The point is that this new iMac would be great for students who live in a dorm room, bedroom or small apartment. I have other friends who have PC's and they love the design. I like the design too. The old iMac had a good design too, but I find the design of the new iMac more appealing.
Technically, my only beefs are the RAM and video card. RAM can be upgraded anytime so this is a small beef for me. The video card is my main beef. Apple should have added a better video card to the high end 20" iMac. Secondly, Apple should have designed the iMac so that we could upgrade the video card ourselves.
I read several posts in the thread. One topic I found interesting, was the topic on the lack of FW800. I had FW400 on my old PC. Guess what, I never even touched the FW ports on my PC. I haven't touched the FW ports on my Mac yet. Here's my opinion. FW800 on iMac = a nice feature that will never be used. As far as I'm concerned, Apple made the right call.
For the regular Joe Schmo, the new iMac is a great computer. If you're a gamer or a person that needs more features and computing power then the PowerMac would be the better choice.
