Greetings all!
I've had my new eMac almost four weeks now and I've noticed that occasionally I'd hear over the regular continuous fan a new "blowing" sound, almost like a new fan's gone on with a slight "turbine" whine, or some mysterious vent's just opened up inside and sometimes I could even a slight draft coming from somewhere. I'm sure it's not the fan merely briefly speeding up and slowing down; it's a distinctively different "wheezing blow." Can anyone tell me what's going on in my new baby?

I do not know anything about the internals of the eMac from a design point, such as how many fans they have. But, also have one and it never makes a different sound than the very low quiet unchanging hum or total silence when it goes to sleep. May have some problem you should call AppleCare about in my humble opinion. If you have not tried or paid to extend the AppleCare plan, you may want to call them on this just as a test of the service, I think they are wonderful.

I'm begining to suspect that it's some kind of fan inside the Combo CD player itself since the blower fan-like sounds only occur with a CD in the eMac in that general area. I guess it'd need a fan anyway during the burning process to keep the CD's plastic from getting too soft under the laser.
Thanks for replying and the AppleCare hint!

Hi
I believe, there is only one fan in the eMacs and it is pretty quiet from my experience.

That's the key. It isn't a fan. Optical drives spin CDs very fast and sometimes CDs have off-weighted labels and you get a buzzing sound from the drive as the CD wobbles a bit than. It's perfectly normal behavior.
It won't happen the whole time a CD is in there since the drive spins down the CDs to a very low RPM when you're aren't using them.
