SUCCESS!

Jim - I had wondered about the que name but had just been leaving it at default. After reading your post, (and with my WinXP directions at my side), I entered LPT1 as the que name - and it worked!

I don't know why, but I have always assumed the print server on this router didn't support Mac printing.

HMB / Jim - thank you both! You guys ROCK!

singraym - too bad you already ordered the AsanteTalk. I would have sold you mine for cheap! images/icons/wink.gif

Sorry guys, one more question. How do I configure LPR printing for OS9?

Phil

Edited to add: I figured it out. To set up LPR for OS8.1 - OS9, you use the Apple's Desktop Printer Utility.

To configure LPR printing in MacOS 9.x or lower (copied from Apple Knowledgebase article number 24409):

1. Launch the Desktop Printer Utility.
2. Select "Printer (LPR)" and click OK.
3. In the "PostScript Printer Description (PPD) File" section, click on "Change..." and select the PPD for your printer.
4. In the "LPR" section, click on "Change..." to bring up the Internet Printer window.
5. Enter the printer's IP address or domain name for "Printer Address".
6. Enter the queue name, if used. Otherwise, leave it blank.
7. Click on "Verify" to verify that the printer was found.
8. Click OK.
9. Go to the File menu and select "Save".
10. Enter a name and location for the desktop printer icon and click OK. The default name is the printer's IP address, and the default location is on the desktop.
11. Quit.

There may be an inexpensive alternative if you have access to an older mac with both an ethernet port and serial localtalk port. I have an old hp laserjet 4ml that still works great and I'm using a quadra 950 as a print server for my ti and iBook both running 10.1.5. The Quadra is running OS8.1 and is hardwired (via ethernet) to a netgear MR314 ethernet switch. The key is installing a little known extension called Localtalk Bridge on the older machine which serves as a software bridge between the ethernet and localtalk ports. Follow the directions here:

blank>threemacs.com

The printer should then be available in the print dialog of machines on that lan.

p.s. you don't need the ethernet switch - you can just go straight from the ti's ethernet port to the older mac's ethernet port.
