hello, i have a problem with mac osx 10.2.8, it goes a little something like this:
when i am running programs, 3rd party or even things like disk utility, and a dialog box comes up, if i don't click it immeadiately the program will stop responding, the pinwheel of death appears and either the "application has unexpectedly quit" thing will happen or i will have to forcequit the unresponsive program. please help, i am new to this forum, have little computer knowledge, but i can follow instructions and learn quickly. need to stop losing valuable time and photoshop data.

try running the basic maintenance.
If the problem happens in disk utility then try booting from the install CD and run disk utility from there.
Repair permissions and repair the disk.
You can also try Disk Warrior or Norton's Utilities to check the volume.

thank you, ive run cache out, disk utility, and macaroni, i still have the problem. i am upgrading tommorow morning in school to 10.3.5 will this fix my problem? also should i use the apple utility, disk copy, to back up my entire disk before hand? how long does this take, is it recomended? i have a really slow external drive with a little less than 100gb on it.thanks ahead,

You should be okay just upgrading, but it's ALWAYS a good idea to make a back up of critical information before making big changes as well as just for peace of mind if you have a major crash.
It will take some time to make a disk image but is worth it.
Whether or not an upgrade fixes your problem remains to be seen. It depends on where the problem is. If it's in a preference file and the new system simply picks up old prefs then it will still show up. But there is a good chance the problem will be fixed.
In this case the Apple Disk Utility may not be doing enough and you need Disk Warrior to examine the directories.

Carbon Copy Cloner will make a bootable copy of your current drive on the external one. I'd do that before you upgrade to Panther. Then, during the upgrade process there will be a screen that says "Options" at the bottom. Click that and select Archive and Install. That will create an entirely new Panther for you, while saving your Jaguar system in a new folder called "Previous Systems." Be sure the check box to "Preserve User Settings" is checked, but it should be by default. Once you're sure everything is hunky dory, just trash the Previous ... folder (and empty the trash to regain the space it takes up). CCC is donationware, i.e., if you decide you don't want it, you trash it and pay nothing. If you like it, you pay what you think it's worth to you.
Also once you're happy with everything, use CCC to make another clone to the external, thereby bringing everything up-to-date. I'd suggest doing a clean one, i.e., not using CCC's optional incremental backup (available in its Preferences). You can set that to operate once you have your system working well, and have a solid backup.

thank you for the help, i just upgraded, i tried to copy my entire disk last night, by the time i was up it was only a third done. no worries though, my programs and files are still here. (so is my problem though) i plan on backing everthing up tonite thru tommorow, is disk copy good enough? i'm not sure if i want to add anymore programs right now.
but about this problem....
whenever a dialog box comes up the program that created it will either unexpectedly quit immeadiatly or will stop responding. this is harmful to productivity, i can hardly get anything done.
i will try completely reloading 10.3 if necessary (my teacher has the disk) but i'd rather not go through all that if anyone can help i will be there best friend.
