Can anybody tell me whether Inkwell works as good as handwriting recognition on my Newton 2000?

For me Ink doesn't work as well as writing on the Newton. This may be partly due to the fact that with the Newton you write directly on the "paper" whereas with a graphics tablet the writing is transferred to the "paper." For this reason I find that I tend to write at an angle on a tablet -- and Ink doesn't distinguish text written at an angle very well.

Those more comfortable with a tablet than I may find that Ink works better for them.

But overall, Ink doesn't seem as accurate as the Newton.

mmm, that's a bit disappointing... my good old Newton still impresses me, and many others that I show it, I really hoped that Apple even improved the handwriting software of the Newton in Inkwell...

I guess I just have to try it though images/icons/smile.gif

As I've pointed out before here, Inkwell is the HWR from Newton, albeit only the printed recognizer---to check this, just write, ``Rosetta!'' three times in InkWell.

The Newton's Cursive recognizer was from Paragraph, and Apple's license to it has lapsed---it can be purchased (product name ``Calligrapher'' for various systems, but not the Mac OS, nor Mac OS X). www.paragraph.com

Interesting, I didn't know that, I thought that Apple made the whole handwriting recognition by itself...

It is really a shortcoming of Inkwell then: on my Newton I only use the cursive recogniser and that works great!

Mmmmm, Apple should reconsider this!

I just ordered a tablet, mostly for graphics fun, but I'll definitely try out Inkwell. It's a pain to search a book for quotes with one hand, and then type with the other. very slow. I will be very happy if Inkwell lets me write down my quotes while looking at the book.
