Imagine I am in a playlist/smart playlist, and I decide I want to delete a song from my library - isn't there a way to do it from the playlist? - Option-dragging to the Trash or something? It is tedious to have to go and search for it in the actual Library and delete it from there, especially as the information entered in the search box doesn't disappear automatically after moving from that playlist (i.e. you have to manually delete it again to show all your songs, even after going to a different playlist and returning).

It can be done with iTunes scripts. Visit Apple's iTunes site for a bunch of scripts. I think the one you want is under Doug's scripts somewhere. I have a script called 'Delete Tracks from Disk&Playlist', which I believe I got from Doug's set of scripts.

I think I was being stupid and not trying the obvious - option-delete does do it, just not option-dragging. However! Thank-you so much for the link to that site (Doug's) - There's a script there which tells me which songs are not in any playlist (aptly called "Not in any Playlist"), which is something I've been trying to work out how to do for ages, as testified by this thread.
