Just wanted to share my small success story...
My new iMac arrived on Monday (ordered it on 10/4).
Got it setup in just a few minutes. Love how it boots up in way under a minute. Began trying to figure out how to transfer all my old docs and files from my old win 98 pc to the iMac. Read some of the help on Apple support. I tried playing with the file sharing settings on both computers, but still could not get it working. I connected the iMac to the dsl modem via ethernet cable so both computers would be on the network.
However, I saw in the iMac settings that you could turn on FTP. All I did was switch that on, then disabled the firewall. On the old PC, I already had an FTP utility called WS_FTP Pro, so I just used that to logon with userid, pswd, and IP address of the iMac. So easy! just began transferring files last night.
Still have some more to do, but when I'm done, all I have to do is disable FTP and re-enable the firewall on the iMac. This was much easier than trying to play with sharing settings on both computers.
One more reason why Mac and OS X rule and Windows doesn't. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
