Is it possible to limit the cache size of Safari, so it cleans up after itself?

No way in Safari itself to limit the cashe size, but there may be some shareware or freeware that will let you enable it, there is a way to empty the cache in safari if you did not know and maybe an applescript could be written and set as a login item to empty it for you whenever you logged in. Someone here who knows applescript might be able to do that.

I made an alias of the Safari cache folder and placed it in a convient location (the dock). Then once a day I delete all the cache files. It really eats up disk space unless you empty the folder regularly. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

how about saving yourself some time and just using the "empty cache" feature under the safari menu?

A hint on my site today explained how to disable the cache -- delete ~/Library/Caches/Safari (while Safari is NOT running), then create an empty text document and save it as Safari (no extension) in the ~/Library/Caches folder.
Safari will no longer be able to cache pages.

I just stuck a cache deactivator option into Safari Enhancer for anyone interested.
