I need some help and I have tried to resolve this problem without reinstalling my OS 10.3.
The problem is with my 17" 1Ghz PB. I can download all of the updates from Apple, but I cannot install any of them. This has been going on for three months now and I have not changed any of the settings on the computer.
I have tried to install automatically and also by downloading the packages and then installing them individually. Nothing seems to work.
If amybody knows how to help me solve this problem, I would appreciate the help.
Thanks, Ron

When you get the "packages" onto your powerbook, what happens (or what doesn't happen)? What type of files are they? --- I am inclined to guess that there is some sort of problem occurring with decompression and the packages aren't "unstuffing" properly.
Let us know more details...

Do you have any antivirus software running that could be blocking installations?

The packages are "dmg" and I installed alladin's stuffit 802 hoping that my stuffit 7 was the culprit, but that is not the case. I still cannot install the packages. The message is "There were errors installin g the software." I have tried different ways to no avail.

In many cases you must inactivate antivirus software before you can use an Installer. The software thinks the Installer IS a virus.

Thanks for all your help. Not only did nothing work, including turning anti-virus software off, I somehow lost Safari. I saved all my files to another hard drive and now I have erased this harddrive and am in the process of re-installing everything.....
I stayed in a hotel and hooked up with their internet connection which was free, but since then the computer has been acting very strangely so I figured that it was time for a real spring cleaning. It got to the point that I could not send e=mail although the settubgs had not been changed.
Again, thanks for the tips and I wish the problems could have been resolved without the measures taken.

actually, being unable to send mail might not have been a symptom of problems. generally, when you move your computer to a different location (different ISP), you must change your mail settings for outgoing server to be able to send mail at all. so you might not have been able to send email because your settings had not been changed. just FYI.

What an IDIOT! After returning home from the hotel I changed the server back to the original but,,,,,,, instead of putting smtp.--------.com under outgoing mail server, I, the dislexic fingered person typed in mstp.--------.com.
I have had Mac,s since the first model and this has stumped me worst than anything, ever. It was so simple that I could not beleive that that was the problem all along.
It goes to show that we are never to old to learn or to make mistakes that are so simple that they are easy to miss.
Thanks for the help, even though I was not looking in the right direction.
