I was going to buy a powerbook and make the switch from a pc. I was thinking about getting next week, but am wondering if i should wait for any new laptops that may arrive. Does anybody know of any that may be releasd or how long this will be?

Nobody truly knows, Apple has gotten away from announcing all of there new hardware during the macworld shows, but they still do from time to time and I think there's a paris show in January. If I were a bettin man I'd say then.
Overall if you need a computer now, go and buy it now, there will always be a faster computer being released soon. Get on that suits your needs now and for the next few years.

i'm waiting for the next version myself too - and even for a next processor. because the Powerbook G4 is now available since 2001 and for me it's quite an investment to make. So i would kill myself if I see the bring out a G5 (or something else) Powerbook in april 2005 or so.. I don't want to spent my 2700 bucks on a powerbook that is obsolete in 6 months.

I strongly doubt that current pbook will be obsolete even 3 years from now.
Older tibooks(over 3 years old) sell for 1k canadian on ebay, and are not obsolete because they are still been used and still possess style and design in construction.
Waiting is sometime good, but when time comes up and you buy a g5 Pbook you'll be happy until first gens problems occur.
All I am saying is that current notebooks from apple's line won't be absolete soon.
I think we all suffer the: neigbhors' yard is always greener than ours, problem. It's also part of the purhcase process, and how to not suffer in long term of cognitive dissonance.
Just a question like that if you can wait the time it needs for a g5 powerbook to be realeased, do you need protability, maybe you should settle for a more powerfull, relatively trouble free and cheaper powermac, no ??
Btw I am just trying to understand, nothing mean intended.

I second that one...get whatever you want today...there are no iminent big upgrades coming in the immediate future...while there are "rumors" of a duel-processor G4 within the year, nothing has been announced, and Apple, within the last 3 months, has been quite open about saying they are having difficulties designing any laptops with a G5 because of the heat issues and that doesn't even appear to be on the radar right now...
If you see a powerbook you like, get it. By the way, the 2700 that you mentioned is for WHAT system?? The only one that expensive is the 17"...the top of the line 15" is about 2700 WITH applecare...

I was having the same problem you are... should I wait for the new powerbook? Well I couldn't wait anymore. I got my PB and will never look back. The notebook is a tried and true design with the solid OS X. Even if there are new chips like the G5 put into the PBs, I am not sure I would be mad. I might be envious of the guy with the latest one, but my 1.5 gHz 15" PB will last me for years. Going from Win to OS X was improvement enough /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Its a common problem. Even though thousands of us are happy with old powerbooks (mine is a Titanium 667mhz G4 that is around 3 years old now and still going strong) there is always a pull towards new equipment. Its the kid in all of us and the computer industry wouldn't be as strong as it is if that pull wasn't there.
In the windows world a machine really does seem to creak after a couple of months but macs do tend to have the ability to be genuinely useable for years and years.
Remember, computers and software will almost always increase in power at a much quicker rate than that at which your needs as a user will. I was a photographer / videographer / designer guy 3 years ago and I used Dreamweaver and Photoshop. And now, guess what, I'm the same guy using the same software (some updated some not depending on price and features). My machine was good enough 3 years ago, and its good enough now.
I plan to upgrade once a G5 powerbook with a dual layer DVD burner becomes available. However, I don't think that will be a reality until the middle of 2005.
