Mail does not retrieve new emails

Recently one of my email accounts stopped working. It does not retrieve new mail off the server. At one point it was giving me an error message saying that it could not connect to the server because port 110 has been blocked. But now that error message does not come up anymore and it still does not work. I know there is a problem with the OS X mail program because Entourage retrives mail just fine. I do not want to have to switch over to Entourage because I like the OS X mail program better. Does anyone have an ideas or suggestions to fix this problem.

You've probably already tried this, but just in case: under the Mailbox menu item, go to "Online Status" and make sure you're actually online when checking for new mail ("Go online").
You should of course try to repair permissions and then restart, then try opening Mail and see what happens.
Might also try deleting the Mail prefs file or, as a last resort, reinstalling the Mail app from disk or download.
