I used iSync once and it deleted all of my music on my ipod. i have been cautious about using. i want to be able to sync my ical and my address book without deleting my music. is there a way of doing it?

so your ipod is not associated with your iTunes then? You have some other persons tunes on it?
You have to have the ipod connected to the computer in order to change the prefs for the ipod within iTunes. The only thing I can think of is when iTunes asks if you want to associate that ipod with your iTunes say no. I have never been in your situation, so I am guessing this is what happens. I am sure someone else will come along and tell you what to do.
there are third party apps that go around the situation, but they are usually broken with iTunes updates. search Versiontracker for "ipod" and see what they have.
