I was given a un-opened processor upgrade for a small non-profit that I do a little computer work for. It's a sonnet upgrade card G4 (500MHZ or 800mhz I think) I can't seem to get it working. The B&W has a mismash of found ram and whatever ram it came with when it was donated.. it already has 10.3.6 loaded on it and I set it up as a dual monitor station. I downloaded the Sonnet cache program and loaded it. The other programs seem to need OS9 and I tried the main one but it didn't want to run in the classic window?? Any ideas? Open classic window first.. check ram.. firmware? I get the bong noise! and a blank screen!

Remove any RAM that is 64MB. It can only be 10 ns.
Get the system running.
How did you install Sonnet cache?
(isn't needed unless it is a G4/800, in which case you have other problems).
G4/500 doesn't need anything.
Classic - you need to select the system folder 9.2 in startup disk pref in OS X, then go to Classic pref panel, after which you can go back and set the system to only boot from 10.3.6.
I assume it came with disks for OS X and 9.2.1 or you'll need to buy a copy (OS 9 can be bought w/ Panther for $20 afterwards).

Once the patch is applied & the machine restarted in OS 9, then you can install the upgrade card, and if needed, the cache s/w you mentioned. Save yourself lots of headaches and DO NOT ATTEMPT THESE PROCEDURES IN OS X CLASSIC MODE, boot into a REAL OS 9 configuration.......
been there, done that, and dont wanna again /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

(I wish that the term "Classic" would only be used for OS X.) "Booting" Classic /sounds like/ native OS 9.2.

I'm going back weds. morning to try the upgrade I'm pretty sure it's a 500mhz card but not positive.. from the post(s) it's looks like I'll have to get the firmware patch from OWC, set-up the G3 to boot in OS 9, reboot in OS9 install the patch, remove all 64 MB ram, mount the card, reboot in OS9 than change start-up back to OS X than reboot into OS X ..WOW that really makes a simple upgarde an epic!!
thanks for the advice .. did I miss anything. After the patch and OS X can I re-install the 64MBs??

Note:I have used salvaged 64's to fill in empty slots in 2 of the G4's that are set-up there!

Wasn't sure if the OS9 changes in start-up drive/folder would be recognized by OS X or that I could "see" the OS X start-up in OS 9.
This is a small poor enviromental non-profit with mostly "salvaged/donated" older Mac's and we're moving them to OS X.. SLOWLY! of course. The B&W G3 is the end results of serveral B&W's donated ..making them into 1 useful machine.
I'll let folks know how it goes.
Been postponing getting the Missing Manual guess it's time to shop!

He doesn't know if he has the Sonnet G4/800, which changes things.
There is an Apple firmware update to allow OS 9 which should have been applied already.
HUH ???? since when did the B&W need a firmware update to run OS 9. I installed OS 9 on my B&W as soon as it was out, and did NOT update the firmware /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
AFAIK, the term "classic" refers ONLY to the compatibility environment of OS X, and booting it is just that.
Booting into a "native" or "real" OS 9 system folder should mean ONLY that and nothing else /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

AND the sucessfull running of 2 HD's w/o corruption from the onboard IDE controller /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I did NOT update the firmware when I installed OS 9, perhaps because it was a retail disk, or perhaps the update was contained within the installation tome ?
