I posted this elsewhere but haven't received any help so I am hoping to find a solution here.
I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software issue but I use Mac OS 9.2.2 on a 600 Mhz Imac with an internal Apple modem. The modem is not responding and doesn't even show up in an Apple hardware test....."no device found" but the modem is definitely there. And there is a good, working, tested and re-tested phone line plugged in. Be that as it may, I am inclined to think it's a software issue.
As soon as I open "system profile" in the Apple System Profiler, it reads "Modem found, no additional information available" but very quickly that changes so that nothing but the word "modem" appears just like my other Macs.
I found this but it hasn't helped:
Remote Access: Modem Not Responding alert
http://docs.info.app...ml?artnum=30893
Since I have always used a cable internet modem, I have done nothing to remote access but look at it and wonder if I'm missing something. Apple Talk is active. In the Apple Talk control panel, I am connected via "Airport" as are 2 other macs in my home.
In the Modem control panel, I see Apple Internal 56k (v90) connected via "Internal Modem." Sound is "on" and dialing is set to "tone." Configurations are set to "default." User Mode is set to "basic."
After doing a clean system reinstall, the modem still doesn't work, and I hope I don't have to do that again. I've run Tech Tool Pro for OS9 and Disk Warrior2 and everything else I can think of, but, alas, still no working modem. Tech Tool Pro's modem test even passed the modem. I have moved the modem preferences to the desktop, restarted, and reset the PRAM and then moved the modem preferences back into the sytem folder where they belong. I have rebuilt the desk top countless times. I cannot find any way to reinstall the modem software with any of the disks I have...Software Restore and OS 9.2.1 disks. I have, however, reinstalled the FAXstf6 software and checked for updates.
Until recently, that modem has always worked fine but then I quit using it for awhile when I tried Jfax. I now need that modem again in order to send faxes via FAXstf 6. I have no idea what prompted it to let me down unless it got jealous of JFax. I have begged forgiveness. Still no modem. I cannot pinpoint anything I've done for this to have happened except to guess that it happened during one of my infrequent crashes.
In the FAXstf Preferences, I selected Apple Internal 56K modem and AT&K4&D2VE appears in the block below "send" and "receive" and both "send" and "receive" are set at 14400bps. The "test" block is faded so the modem cannot be tested. When I attempt to turn on the fax sofware, this dialog window pops up: "FAXstf Preferences could not update the modem settings because the modem is not responding. Please make sure the fax modem is connected."
I haven't found anything in software updates that seems applicable. Firmware is up to date and so are all automatic software updates for OS 9.2.2 except for Ipod software because I don't have one......yet. Everything else on my mac works flawlessly.
I was hoping there might be a way to actually set the modem to its original specs but don't know if that can be done or, if it can, how to do that. On the other hand, that might not be the solution at all but I am running out of things to try.
What's a fellow to do but ask for help and be thankful for any that comes my way.

Thank you for these. I have read them thoroughly. The question now is how to reset the modem to see if that helps.

I found this info on this website. I have no idea what iMac model or OS it is for. It would be great if someone can confirm this information is correct.
"To update (the Apple modem) or not, that is the question. It seems Apple really has problems with their modem updater for the PowerBook G3, iMac, B&W, G4, Cube, and iBook. Some people report that the modem fails the upgrade and is then no longer usable; while others report that the modem works better, longer and with fewer hang-ups. Some of the pitfalls can be using a different modem string than you are suppose to be using, or having to select a different phone number from your provider. DO NOT stop the installation once you start it or you will have a non-working modem.
If for some reason you need to reset your modem to the factory settings, try this (from the MacFixit Web site).
1. Unplug the modem line from telephone jack. Unplug all other peripheral devices from the Mac.
2. Shut down the Mac for one minute; then restart.
3. Open the Modem control panel and select the Null Modem 9600 script. Close and Save.
4. Open the Remote Access control panel. Select Options; select Protocol, deselect the top three boxes and select the bottom box "Connect to a command-line host." Select OK.
5. Click Connect and a PPP control window will open. From here, enter the following AT commands:
ati12 (s1 should appear, this means that the modem is responding properly. If s1 does not appear, the modem may need to be repaired or replaced).
at*nc22 (this AT command resets the EPROM and country code in the modem)"

Thank you for sharing this. I did this all the way to here:
The window comes up and the pointer is there in the window to make the entries but I cannot make an AT command entries. Absolutely nothing happens when I try to type.

If the Hardware test said there was a problem the modem is probably bad. You can double check it though. Go to versiontracker.com and in their OS 9 section search for zterm. When you launch it, it will probably ask you to choose a modem port, then it will do its little dance and if all is good with the modem the window that comes up will say something like ATE1 V1, then OK. The important part is OK. If it doesn't say OK the modem is bad.
If it says OK, go to the Dial/Directory menu, click New, put in a phone number, like a cell phone or something, name it, click OK, highlight the number and click Dial. If it dials the number and you connect the modem is good.
ZTerm was very popular back in the good ole' dial up only days for file transfer, but it comes in handy for this too.

This looks like a good tool to check but is there a trial version? If not, it costs $20. Does that sound right?

It should still launch and work, they may have a nag screen asking for payment but it should still function.
