Is there a way to lock my workstation without loging out?
something like pressing windows key + L.

I know you can set up screen saver to kick in and ask for password when deactivated but it is not exactly what i want...

any ideas?

Thanks!

actually there is images/icons/smile.gif

Application - Utilities - Keychain Access - then "VIEW" activate "Show status in Menu Bar" - it will display a little lock next to your clock - by clickin on it you can choose "lock screen" from the menu - voila..

Hello.

Open keychain access and select "view" in the menu bar and then check "show status in menu bar". Then you can click the padlock and select "lock screen". This seems to be similar to what is in windows XP or 2000 although it doesn't take you back to the login screen. If this is what you where talking about already, then I apologize in advance.

[edit] Beat me too it, lol

Hi
As far as I know the screen saver password prompt is your only way. I could be wrong. You could always check Version Tracker for a third party app. You can also make a hot corner so you don't have to wait for it to "kick in" after a certain amount of time. So, whenever you leave your machine and don't want intruders just throw you mouse to the hot corner and voila it is protected. Good Luck!

If you just don't want to wait for the screen saver to start, why not make a "hot point"?

...funny i assumed that hot corner activates screen saver as soon as mouse enters it and since i always have bunch of windows/apps open i constantly move them around, so i didn't want screen saver activate when i resize move something. I just tried it out, and it also works for me, mouse pointer has to 'pause' over hot corner to activate screen saver. cool.

This is just another example how fun it's to use macs, i constantly discover some new smart aspects of it. Why oh why i have spent all these years on Win ? images/icons/smile.gif

Hey this 'hot corner' feature was one of the first things I discovered in X. It rocks. I use it extensively to lock my pesky bothersome brother out when he should be doing his homework. He figured out the hot corner thing though, hope he doesn't figure out the password. images/icons/rolleyes.gif

Why? 'Cause it's a Windows dominated world. For a very good (and fast, and humorous) read, Scott Kelby's book, Macintosh...The Naked Truth, is highly recommended.

The book is "An irreverent, off-the-wall, PC-slammin', totally biased look at what it's like to be a Macintosh user in a Windows-dominated world." Well, that's the way he describes it on the book's cover. I laughed throughout the book, and I can tell you it's an accurate profiling of us (Mac users).

You might want to read it to see what he recommends you do when you encounter the PeeCee weenies.
