Our small construction office needs an 11x17 laser printer. Color is not needed, but it needs to do grayscale. I was looking at the HP5100. Any advise? Any other laser printer recommendations? Do I need to worry about postscript handling?

not familiar with the HP... in the medical field we usually use Codonics dye sublimation.. but normally, postscript would be a must.

I use the HP LaserJet 5100tn in my office. It has worked great and I definitely recommend it to anyone in the market for a laser printer. It was purchased approx. a year ago and I have not had any problems with it.

February issue of Macworld just did an article comparing 4 laser printers. May want to check it out.

It does a very nice job on grayscale images.
I am not sure what you mean by
"and is postscript needed"
I normally print from InDesign (my files contain images from Photoshop or Illustrator); I also use the Microsoft Office apps to print once in a while. The HP5100 handles them all.
I access it from my G5 DP Powermac via IP Printing. I hope that answered your question.

answers most.. the important one about greyscale.
I was just wondering if is was a postscript printer (itsa font issue) or just install drivers that came with it... or out of box printing, no additional drivers needed.

thanks.

Yes, it is a postscript printer. Here's a link to a spec sheet on the HP Laserjet 5100:
HP Laserjet 5100 Printer Specs
I think that my Mac already had a driver for it. I don't recall receiving a CD with it.
