I have been doing my son's data file for several years now on the Mac. I want to export it so he can use it on the PC to enter his data. Then I want him to export it so I can use it on the Mac again to prepare taxes. There may be several transfers between us.
Will this be an easy thing to do, or am i looking for more trouble than it is worth.
Both PC and Mac would be 2005 versions.

There is an interesting thread on TidBits Talk (mentioned in this week's TidBits newsletter) on Quicken. Among the things discussed is transfer between Mac and PC... and it seems that transfers between platforms can be troublesome.
TidBits talk thread
Of course perhaps only people who have problems with Quicken post on forums like this... maybe someone will post with the good news that they have no trouble going back and forth...

The link does not work for me.
If I copy and paste the link, I get to a page asking about changing my password.
If I move back in the URL, I get 404 error, and other strange places.
If I go to just tidbits and search for quicken, I get really old stuff about quicken.
Please guide me further. Thanks.

it is troublesome - no two ways about it. however, if you only want to do taxes then you may be able to just export taxable transactions. I know Q/Win does a 'tax report' file but don't know if that can be used on the Mac. doesn't sound like you need to transfer the whole file unless you need to massage it - which I would do on the Win machine before transfer. If you can limit the amount of data you probably improve the odds of success.

I really want to do more than taxes.
I want to do some data entry of things that get mailed to my address.
My son wants to do data entry of his expenses and income.
This goes on throughout the year.
He used to come over to enter his checkbook at the end of the year.
But now he has a real job, not much time, and wants to keep up throughout the year.

There are a couple of requests mixed together here. Let's see if I can get some additional clarification from you-all:
What type of accounts are contained in the data file?
- investment accounts don't always transfer well, because there are different investment types in Windows and Mac versions
Is any account enabled for online banking?
- Most banks that support Mac also support Windows, but it's tougher to export online accounts between platforms
How will you divide the data entry up between you?
- Once you've done an intitial export to .qif and imported to a PC, you can do a custom export of transactions within a certain date range to update the data between files. You'll need to keep track of when you last transferred, or you'll have duplicate [or missing] transactions, qif exchange is not supported by Intuit
- should you run into difficulties, you would need to pay Intuit tech support for assistance. This is NOT considered a free tech support call. Intuit doesn't test this type of data exchange, as far as I'm aware.

Yes, that works much better.
It seems from the discussion that it is not wise for me to exchange data between the mac and pc version.
I am quite disappointed.

I have many accounts - investment, checking, charge,
What are the differences in the investment accounts between mac and pc?
None are enabled for online banking.
Data entry will probably be divided into investments for me, and checking and charges for him.
But he wants to keep track of the investments too, since he buys and sells. I just get the paperwork on it.
will this work well? It seems simple enough
